New Overclocker. Have a question Q8200

So I got a new rig a few months ago and have been reading up on overclocking since then. I finally gathered the balls to do it and it seemes to be ok. My rig looks like this

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33 Ghz
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
ASUS EAH4850

I bumped up the FSB to 357 to give me about 2.5Ghz. I've been testing the reults with OCCT and it says
CPU Frequency: 2142 Original: 2333 Overclock: -8.2%
Bus Frequency: 357 Original: 333 Overclock: 7.2%

I did a 6minute test and got some results, but i have no idea what they mean.

What is CPU Frequency and what does it mean that it is in the negative value?

The CPU multi has been decreased by the motherboard (7 to 6). I think it is automatic...
Lock the CPU multi to 7 into the BIOS. And disable all kind of options for the energy saving, etc.
 
Its on 7. and I upped the Clock to 380. I get 2.66 now, which is where i'll keep it for now. But please let me know if there are problems or potential problems that any of you see in the first post.
 
Also, I did a test and the temps on all four cores were topping out around 72 C, according to "SpeedFan" and I stopped the test. Idling is around 43C. Something wrong? or is that normal? again, im Overclocking at 2.66 with the specs listed above.

you still using the stock cooler i'd suggest getting a aftermarket one. xigmatek has some good ones. What case do you have? What case fans?

I have Antec 900 EA650 with the stock fan everywhere on high, And im wearing a coat in my room, lol. I left the overclocking at 2.5ghz for now, i guess until i get better coolers. Thanks tho, didn't know coolers made such a big difference.
 
72 C !!! It's running at how many volts??
Did you monitor the idle temps with stock settings?
I've got a 900 too and that case is very well ventilated.

72C is crazy to be running overclocked, especially on a stock heatsink.
 
Damn, I hope i didnt do any damage with my stupidity. I'll be undoing all the overclocking shit for now, until I get better cooling going on. Thanks everyone.

Yhahh, im not sure on the voltage. I have a 650 PSU. I wanna say it was around .9 per cpu in the BIOS, if that makes sense.
 
couple of steps before oc'ing again:
- get a better cpu cooler
- make sure your voltage isn't set to auto but to a standard voltage. Something like 1.25volts depends on your vid. You can check your vid with coretemp.
- get a oc toolkit together. I like everest for monitoring loads of stuff (temps, voltages, fan speeds, cpu speeds, memory speeds, cpu load). and prime95 for putting load on my cpu and memory. I also use cpu-z/coretemp (monitoring cpu), hdtune(monitoring hdd), gpu-z(monitoring video card) and superpimod for checking my cpu speed.
- read the oc'ing 101 in this forum

other than that you didn't do all that bad.

Thanks a lot. Good to know my computer is ok, and I did read the Overclocking 101 and perhaps didnt notice all the special equipment required for OCing.
