New PC, but with XP

Need a new desktop with 17" monitor. Would prefer to keep XP as my son has lots of PC games. Any good supplier of refurb/new desktops with XP in UK?

Thanks

whats your budget?
£300 tops. Reasonable size monitor - 17" if 4:3 ratio, or same height if widescreen. If XP, prefer 2G mem, don't need much HDD - 250G would be ample.
I'd consider assembling one myself, but prefer ready made unless it's a big saving.
Cheers

the main thing with self assembled is the quality of the build. You can get the parts you need, with not much else, and get quality parts.
Just remember, your preassembled computer is built by the lowest bidder.

What games and such are you going to be playing (will determine the necessary parts). Also, do you have any parts that you can reuse (DDR3 RAM, processors from old computers, CD/DVD drives, hard drives (they are really expensive right now)

Pretty old games really. Rome total war is the most intensive - remember that the games have previously been played on 512Ram with a 256M graphics card. The DVD writer is fine, all else pretty obsolete IMO.

Possibly the best advice ever.

I found this one on newegg for 219 USD but i am not sure what that would translate into in UK currency.... you could easily install XP on this.
Thank you. I think I'd rather a conventional desktop with a DVD drive.

Most games can be played on Windows 7, I pay a few games from the 1990's such as Age of Empires that run fine on Windows 7 64-bit.

XP is still usable. the 2 only main downsides is the security holes (remedy by not going on the internet with it), and 32 bit.
If the OP wants to use XP, more power to him.

Wow, thank you for such a comprehensive shopping list! Much appreciated.

Ah, interesting. I wasn't aware of that. Maybe I need to look into that a bit more.

if you could stretch the budget a little, and get windows 7, then you could get a better build.

Also, you may want to look into WINE for Linux, it may support your games and leave you with a much more secure, and freee OS option.

Hi there. Well I just built a new PC. Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3. An i5 2500K, 16 gigs Corsair, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

None of the video editing programs I used worked on the damned thing. I loaded XP Mode, still issues.

I took 12 gigs of memory out and re-formatted and installed XP Pro 32 bit. with 4 gigs of memory. What I need now works, and I like the look and feel of XP anyway. I can always change later, so I say go ahead with XP. There are plenty of free security softwares free that will help protect.
