I got a new PC today for recording music.

I have a Windows XP disk a friend gave me ages ago that i have used to install XP on a PC (that had Windows 2000) on it years ago

Anyway, when i start up my new pc i keep getting a message NTLDR is Missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I looked this up on the internet and it says its because its trying to boot from a non bootable disk or source

After doing Crtl+Alt+Del i held Del to get into the Bios (which i know nothing about) and its set to try boot initially from the DVD Drive, 2nd boot device is also the dvd drive and the 3rd device its set to look for its the Maxtor Hard drive. So it is looking to boot from the correct place - the DVD drive

I have the DVD-R in with windows XP on it (i tried it on another PC and it launches automaticaly into the "Load XP" screen.

I took off the side of the new pc and cable running from the DVD drive seems to be firmly in place.

Anyone have any ideas. Im totally stuck ?

Maybe the Windows XP disc i have isnt suitable for booting - is that even possible ?

What about copying XP onto a USB key and telling the bios to boot from a "Removable device" - will that work ?

Thanks for any help :)

Sounds like its not booting the disc, its supposed to say, push any key to boot from disc, once you hit that it should take you to a blue colored screen.
You could boot from USB if you want, try another disc, or you said you had 2 CD/DVD drives right? Try the other one?

Go into bios and change your first boot option to cd/dvd then when your done with installing your os change back to first boot as hd then cd/dvd if you dont have floppy disable that. Hope this helps.

is it an upgrade disk???

you might have either a copy disk with no boot file or a fully licensed xp upgrade disk........

can you post everything as it is printed on the disk?

Thanks for the replies guys. Its a copy disc i had lying around for years. To be honest i dont know where it came from but i updated a PC years ago from windows 2000 using it and it worked fine.

It also starts up automatically when i put it into any other PC with a Windows XP Install screen

When i open the cd there is a few files and folders there

DOCS
I386
Support
Valueadd

All the above are folders

Then theres

Autorun.inf
Readme.htm
Setup.exe
Win51
Win51IP

The total folder is 484MB

I only have 1 DVD drive on the PC.

I set the 1st, 2nd and 3rd settings all to boost from the DVD only but still nothing. It says to boost from a bootable drive or insert a bootable device or something

Maybe its not recognising my DVD drive ? I checked all the cables and the name of the DVD drive is appearing on the BIOS

Maybe it is the CD of XP im using ? I really have no idea

The mother board im using is a ECS Elitegroup G31T-M7 to support Intel

Thanks a million for all your replied guys. Much appreciated. This is driving me CRAZY !!

wouldnt bother with a copy disk mate-most are full of shite and its a upgrade copy so you need to put 98 or me on...

You said you tried the disk in another pc and it boots?
If not try that.
Can you put the drive from another pc in this one to test the drive?

I put the XP disc onto 3 other computers and it worked but it wouldnt work on this.

This morning i got Vista off my brother and that worked first go.

Would have prefferd XP but..... at least its working.

My XP disc may have been an upgrade disc or something alright

Thanks for the help guys
