new PC won't start - wiring problems?

hey guys. i've installed all hardware and I believe i've wired everything correctly. All the front panel wires are connected, fans, etc but when i try to turn it on, I see a brief white light flash. Nothing turns on. The flash only happens thefirst time i try to turn it on. Any ideas? My case is here.

Also, the flash is coming from the DVD drive. So this must mean power is coming in. But the machine doesn't beep or power up at all.

Dead board? bad supply? The flash on the dvd drive suggests that there is power at some level going to the board. And the first way to see if that is the problem would be to try out another supply. Meanwhile you could try jumping the power switch pins on the board itself to see what happens. Cheap switch thats no good? That will do it at times if everything is good.

Try a different power supply, or just try powering as little components as possible, i.e. Unhook HDD's, CD/DVD Drives, External Graphics Card power, then see if it turns on.

Do any fans attempt to spin round? My guess is going with a faulty motherboard or power supply. If you can try the PSU in a different computer, and see if it powers it, then we can rule it out.

As you posted in my thread with similar issues, this could be the same problem I have which is that your Mobo isn't putting out enought voltage for the ram. I however get the power to come on when I power up, with all the LED's and Heatsink. After you try all of the above posted ideas might be worth the effort of trying a new stick of lower voltage ram. If that was listed above I simply missed it.

If the memory was mismatched there would have been some indications there with a beeping code. On a new build like the one there you are probably looking at a bad board where no error codes are heard or a bad supply(Asphire? ouch!).

i had the same problem to... make sure that your motherboard isn't coming in direct contact with the case... mine was and i had to put an extra pad underneath it to keep it off the case... worked fine after that...

Oh well nothing like a little ground out to start the game there right? :P Try batting a few bad caps out of those cheap supplies they thrown in. way back! way back! That one's gone! !

Make sure everything is wired properly, incorrect wiring can do that.

Edit: if you take the power cable out of the PSU then put it back in, and try to turn it on and you get the flash again, then i think its the wiring.

Nice case btw.

If you forget to plug in the four wire 12v plug that goes in near the cpu socket the system will fail to boot. That is another one thing that can be overlooked especially if you have spent more time with the older model boards.

Hmm, know what, I think the motherboard may be grounded. I will try starting it with the mobo out of the case and I'll let you guys know if it works.

Make sure you put the board down on a non conductive surface. Try running it that way with only the video card and memory.

One quick question, what goes into the PCI-E slots on the board? I assume something from the graphics card, but the manuals don't say. And I have no unused wires.

The PCI-E slots are for PCI-Express video cards. If you have more then one seen on the board the one on the end and closest to the PS2 and other connectors as well as cpu socket is the 16x slot for single card use. The other seen would be for an SLI or Crossfire dual card setup.

yes. I just tried reconnecting all parts (minus DVD, HDD, and GPU) and placed the motherboard on a non-conductive surface. This time another flash of light comes from the front panel area, but it still doesnt power up. Guess ill try replacing the PSU..

Is it possible for the Power Switch itself to be defective? this is frustrating

If you saw a flash when pressing... but did you try holding in the power buttom for a few seconds more? If you just quickly pressed the button a brief flash of one of the drive lights would indicate the switch is good. But you may have to hold it in a few seconds longer?

Correct wiring is nice but also make sure that the board isnt shorted out (i.e., one of the revs of the instructions for mounting a BigTyphoon has the alternate installation technique potentially short out the board)

I have the same problem too. Some gave me an emachine 2400+ because it was dead. I tried disconecting everything except cpu and memory. The fan starts up on the CPU and then shuts off. No POST whatsoever. Tried changing memory, nothing! I bought a new mobo because I though OK screw it, I'll suffer through this one...NOPE! Same freaking thing. I thought maybe it is the PSU, nope same thing on both MBs. Tried replacing the CPU with one I had laying around, same thing. I made sure there was no grounding happening, still the same. I am so frustrated too. No beeps gives me no hope.
So, what the he** is up here......whats the chances that I get a mobo with the excact same symptoms. I say it is pretty low. I have gone through everything and granyed there is a slight chance that I may have two dead CPUs and that it is not the MB, but would I get a beep or something if it was the CPU? Thanks everyone for posting on the subject!!!

The Emachine i a T2482.
