New pc

Recently got a new pc and I want to put old hd into new pc. I also want to put my cd burner from old pc into new one as it has only cdrom. The new pc is from 2002 or 2003 not sure, the old one is 1999.

The new pc has three ide cables. One for hd is 80-wire but has only one connection. Can I use 80-wire from old pc or should I buy new?
The cable for the cdrom is also 80-wire but again only one connection. My old pc's cd cable is 40-wire but has multiple connectors. Would that be too slow?

Also, the new hd is running xppro and is ntfs, old one is win98se and fat32. Is a master slave setup ok? I read somewhere that you can't transfer files between the two? What are my options there?

Thanks
Mike

40 wire cable is fine for optical drives (although some modern DVD-burners want 80 wire to burn at 16X). It's not good for hard drives though, as you are limited to ATA/33 speed. If you can, use the 80-wire cable on the primary channel for the hard drive (if you only want to use one drive) and the 40-wire cable on the secondary channel for the CD drives. Otherwise, buy an 80-wire cable with multiple connectors and use it with your hard drives.

As for transferring files between the two - Windows XP will read both NTFS and FAT32 partitions. If you boot with XP you can transfer between the drives with no problems. Windows 98 cannot read NTFS partitions, so you will not even be able to see the NTFS drive if you boot with 98, much less transfer files between them.
