New Processor?

I recently got a PC with an Intel Celeron D Processor. The processor is fine for everyday use but I hear it isn't that great on gaming :) . I was thinking about upgrading to a Pentium 4 (the only other one my Motherboard supports, and the only one I can afford). Is this worth it, or can I still play games with my Celeron D as long as I have a good graphics card (ie. 128-256MB)? Any thoughts?

well, first of all, graphics card performance isn't determined by memory. When you say playing games do you mean like hardcore gaming? You would probably see a bigger performance boost by buying a good graphics card than buying a new processor. Anyone else agree?

Yeah, whats your budget for upgrading your computer, we can sugest what you need. Also what are your systems specs? Whas it bought prebuilt or did you build it?

I would highly recommend getting a new cpu, since my Celeron D 2.4Ghz paired with my 9600xt was barely able to play halo, and couldnt play half-life 2. But with a P4 3Ghz it worked very well.

Celeron's are horrible gamers, and general intel isn;t at all, butintell can definaatly still handle it well easily, just not "as good" as AMD can be, I would definatly suggestion upgrading to a P4, BUT i would wait a while and save up so you can get a good P4 so the upgrade is actully worth your while.

I will never become a hard-core gamer but I would like to play games with higher graphics requirements (nothing like Doom 3 or anything). I have about $180 to spend. I wish too that I could get an AMD but that would mean a new motherboard and other components which push up the $$. Other than gaming, my processor would have to be at least satisfactory with CAD software.

Thanks for the help :) :) :)

The P4 will no doubt play games better than a "mathced" Celeron (meaning, a similiar GHz speed and socket Celeron) but if the game is Solitaire or Online Hearts, it won't matter much lmao. What is the speed of your Celeron, 2.4GHz, 3GHz? Could u list a few of the games you will want to play? I'm thinking u should upgrade just for system performance and incase u decide to buy an intense game later on, even if it's not a huge improvement now.

My Celeron D runs at 2.53Ghz. Currently I only have integrated graphics. The only games I would be playing are Need For Speed Most Wanted (and the rest of the series), America's Army, Sim City, and various CAD programs. The most I can spend is about $180 (that is for the Processor and the Graphics card need I one).

what do you mean? i think that a $80 videocard that can play battlefield 2 at medium settings is good dont you think

Radeon 9600XT 256MB for $70 will do much better, and is only $71 including shipping :D At least that's what I'm ordering.
