i jsut got an amd x2 3800. i dont know weather to use the thermal pad that comes with the processor or my artic silver 5. i read that the paste doesnt last long and i would need to replace it. is this true?
Not sure if that's true but using AS5 is much better than using a thermal pad. When you use the AS5 make sure you don't put too little or too much of it on the CPU.
A blob no bigger than a grain of rice is about the right amount you should put on. I'm not sure what you should use to take off a thermal pad, I just used a small cloth when I took it off of my old processor and HSF.
If you really want to get it off good, use some 97% isopropyl alcohol, or acetone works really good. Follow thes Application Instructions for better guidance.
the thermal pad will last longer than thermal paste. the main drawback is that the thermal pad isnt as effective as paste. i think you have to reapply the paste every 2 years and the pad last 5 years. not exactly sure tho.
If I were you, I would NOT use the pad. At least on my Intel, the wax fills in the microscopic valleys, and you cant get it out. It makes the heat transfer less effective later when you use grease.
yes, Arctic Silvers products are ingenius. silver 5 is the best for processors... and for my video ram i used their ceramique because silver 5 wont fill in the gap between the cooler and the memory.
