Hey guys, I'm looking for a new PC but I'm wondering if everything's fine.

CPU : Intel Core i7 4970K 404.99$

Mobo : Asus Maximus VII Hero 325.70$

Ram : Avexir Core Series 16Gb 159.99

SSD : Samsung 850 Pro 256Gb 174.99$

HDD : WD Black 4TB 259.99$

Power supply : EVGA-G2 1000W 249.99$

Graphic card : Gigabyte G1 980 Ti 839.99$

Case : Phantek Enthoo Luxe 189.99$

Main monitor : Samsung 32" Curved 589.99$

Gaming monitor : ASUS VS278Q-P 349.99$

Total : 3545.61$

My questions are :

1) Raid-1 SSD worth it ?

2) WD Green or Black ?

3) Is a 4k monitor worth it ? From what I've seen, 30 fps seems like the maximum.

4) What would you guys change ?

Thank you in advance.

PS :

- Yes I'm going to overclock it

- I have a 3 to 4 000$ budget

- There's a 300-400$ on this budget for water cooling.

Samsung seems to be the popular SSD, but I wouldn't touch 'em. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/02/26/samsung_850_pro_ssds_getting_borked_firmware/

Personally, I have seen more problems with the 840 and 850 on forums than I can count. I just have to laugh because I have a very old G.Skill Sniper 60 GB SSD in a laptop that has over 5 TB written to it and still works. In fact it just now showed 99% health.

I also have an Adata 120GB Sandforce (yeah SANDFORCE!) SSD that still works flawlessly.

I'd go Intel, Adata or something else that has good reviews. Granted the speed isn't as fast as the 850, but I really don't think you will notice.

Case is mighty pricy and look plain. I don't care for cases that have the HDD pull out horizontally. Rather like to pull the drive's from the front. I have this case. Not a full tower though. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Storm_Scout_2_Advanced-_-11-119-263-_-Product

With RAM you want low CAS and low voltage. Check this out: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233674

Just to let you know, the knew Skylake Intel CPU is coming out sometime Aug/Sep if you want to wait.

1) Raid-1 SSD worth it ? It will actully slow down FPS due to CPU usage. One SATA 3 SSD would be plenty fast enough. Unless your looking for data redundancy.

2) WD Green or Black ? Black

3) Is a 4k monitor worth it ? From what I've seen, 30 fps seems like the maximum. Don't know muck about 4K, but do games support 4K?
Personally I wouldn't do water cooling due to the threat of water in my tower. I have read horror stories despite a manufacture replacing your parts. Why be without a computer for a while waiting for a warranty, have to build the new PC and risk the inevitable data loss? People use it, but air is sufficient if you ask me. Perhaps water cooling the GPU would be what I would do.

If you have another means of backup for your data then RAID1 SSD is kind of a waste.

4K is supported in a lot of games but some of the interface standards don't have a high enough bandwidth to exceed 60 Hz.

Source? RAID1 requires practically zero overhead as you're writing exactly the same data to the other member, no parity calculations required.

So, an intel 730 would be better than this Samsung 850 Pro ?

And I chose those rams because of the look.. They're really badass !

One last question, should I go for :

A) 4x1Tb Raid 10
B) 2x2Tb Raid 1
C) Keep one 4Tb ?

Thanks for your answers.

I personally think Crucial makes some of the most solid SSD's.

Considering, you'll almost never see the RAM since it's inside the case... this is a horrible reason to buy RAM.

What are you trying to accomplish here? If it's just for storage, there's no need for RAID 0.

Yes I will see my case since it will be on the desk, wich is why I wanted a custom water-cooling loop inside.

And I said Raid 1 not 0. It's gonna be a media server such as a gaming PC so I'm wondering if Raid 1 would be a good option or not.

Btw, I'm from Montreal, Quebec so I'm sorry if my english is poor.

Edit :

I just checked Crucial SSD and they have such a low sequential write. The SSD is gonna have my OS + favorite games so I wanna feel the speed from a SSD.

There was a website I read that talked about what would be good hardware for Flightsimulator and they advised a RAID would decrease FPS. Can't find that website now. I'll have to look further latter on.

Besides. RAID is a waist IMO unless you want redundancy.

are we talking just for the CPU for watercooling? for 300-400 you could possibly do it but you would be much better getting an AIO cooler like a corsair H110i GT or H100i GTX or you would go over budget easily.

for looks i cannot reccommend the corsair 900D enough but it is expensive. That way in the future if you wish to do full watercooling you can fit over 1 metre of radiators inside easily. I have 2x 480 and 1x240 in mine. It is a huge case and very easy to work in.

Nah, I'll watercool the cpu, gpu and maybe the mobo as well but mainly Cpu, gpu. I know there isn't such a big difference between air and water cooling, it's most likely for the look. I dont know much about water cooling tho but this isn't such a problem, I'm here to learn ;).

I know that the 900D is pretty expensive but back then, I had a Antec nine hundred and it was WAY too tiny for my rig (HD4870X2, 4x WD 640Go, etc.) ! I'm looking for a huge case now.

@Agent smith

Well, I'm not planning to store any games on my HDD. I was thinking about a raid 1 just so I can be safe and have a backup.

The Intel 730 is one of the highest performing SSD's on the market. That, or the Samsung SM951. I would recommend getting a 500GB Intel 730/SM951 SSD and a 3-4TB single external drive, or if that's too expensive look at a 250GB Intel 730/SM951, with another 250GB Samsung 850 EVO for game storage, then a 3-4TB HD.

If you are only using storage, there is no real reason for RAID 0. If you needed a lot of storage that's one thing, but they make 6 and 8TB hard drives so it's pretty irrelevant to RAID lower capacity drives just because.

Personally though I would hold off on this build until next month. Intel Skylake is coming out in August and is going to be a major improvement over the current Haswell processors.

Thanks for the infos. I'm already going to wait, I'm still saving money until I see price of Skylake.

I should consider grabbing a bigger SSD since all my games are going there.

That's my plan for my new build as well. I have two 250GB SSDs now, one for the OS and apps and the other for games, and it's really annoying having to switch.

Yeah, I bet. I should buy a 480/512Gb SDD + 5/6Tb HDD. I dont know much about those SSHD. I mean, what's the point of having 8gb flash on a X Tb HDD ? Am I missing something ?

It's for people who want better performance than a standard HD but can't afford an HD.

Just a faster cache for frequently accessed data. A lot of the time the OS gets placed into the NAND so you do see a bit of a speed up, although they'd probably perform to a higher degree with a larger cache.

Alternatively you could argue that the data just gets cached into RAM anyway, but that doesn't help you on 'first load' for a freshly powered on system.

Well the OS + most of my games are going to be on the SSD. I'm planning to store movies, music, etc. on my HDD.. Would it be worth it ?
