New PSU does not fit and its fan is above processor/fan

I just got my corsair VX 550 watt PSU. I took out my cheap okia 400 watt. The corsair is only slightly bigger but I seem unable to get it to fit in the case. There is a metal piece that the okia rested on. I think I can remove this and still be able to mount and safely rest the PSU. I guess this is my only option since I can't force it in anymore, only about a half inch or so. There is a fan in the power source which happens to rest directly above the processor/processor fan. Is that safe?

Ok well it is not the plate that is in the way. I bent it out of the way and it still does not fit. It is the top of the case which blocks the PSU. I am not sure how to fix that either. I can't get to it with a hammer, pliers, and I tried a vice but it did not work. I guess I can try dismantling the case and taking a hammer to it. Suggestions welcome. Still wondering about it being right above the processor/fan as well.

i cant find that case, can you get a pic of the inside? if you can get it in there, i dont think the heatsink would be problem as long as you have no tempuature problems..

Here ya go. The first picture is with the okia in the case. I marked in red on the 3rd picture as far as I can get the PSU in. The case isn't really made to be taken apart so I may have to remove the components and then try to bend the curved metal at the top. I figured I can take out the metal plate that the PSU rests on so that it does not block the fan. There is a small metal piece it can still rest on I think and I'll have it mounted with screws.

Yes, the one in the case did, the okia. The corsair did not. The only difference in size is the corsair is 2/10 of a centimeter taller.

That is ridiculous... what horrible engineering. What if you sheered the bottom plate completely off so it is flush with the back of the case?

I think I will do that so the fan of the PSU isn't blocked. The problem still remains the top of the case where it must V in a little. I could get longer screws but there will be a half inch or so between the PSU and the case. I pushed pretty hard and it does not budge. I work till 645 in the morning so I'll probably seriously get into it this weekend when I am off. I have a sledge hammer so if I take all the components out I am sure the metal will give way. It sure is a pain in the butt though. What could I use to cut the plate, are there metal cutters or shears? I can bend it to snap it off but I think it might leave a little.

Do you have access to a dremel? That would probably be the most correct way to do it, and you wouldn't have to take the case apart. If you are taking it apart, you could use tin snips.

Agree w/ Poe's Dremel suggestion. Whacking on it with a hammer will bend the frame, possibly making other things not fit--kind of like when you crash a car. Hit one side of the frame hard enough, something on the other side won't fit later. Don't Dremel the case if there's a prayer in hell of returning it.

Another option is to get another case if it's in the budget. Ceewi1 has a nice guide, go with that list until you really know what to look for. Most case issues are things like minor annoyances, but a case that doesn't follow accept ATX measurements? Just shouldn't make it to market. What retailer sold it to you?

I started regretting small things like the cheap PSU. This issue has frustrated me. I think I may just rig the PSU somehow until I can afford to get a new case.

I dunno if it's possible, and you most certainly can try... but maybe try switching those 2's cases around? Crazy, but might work.

I found the piece that was keeping the PSU from fitting. It was next to the large plate and was a pain in the a** to bend down. I finally set it all up. I am disappointed in the case and will certainly consult the forum gods before my next purchase.
