new puter old drive.

SATA or IDE?

If it's IDE, before installing Windows, I would wipe the HDD with a program called DBAN, it runs out of a Linux kernel, so it boots into its own system. This just cleans ALL of the files off of the drive and may take a little while, but I have noticed performance differences.

You'll probably need to reinstall/repair windows if you want to boot off the drive but otherwise you shouldn't have a problem

I have the computer built and ready to take the drive out of this computer and put it in the new one. Where should I go from here? I backed up the important stuff from the drive.

Stick the HDD in your new PC, boot it up and see what happens.. regardless, a re-install would probably be best.. at least a Windows Repair to re-install the appropriate drivers for your new system would be in order :)

I installed the hard drive. The computer powered up then a blue screen flashed and I couldn't read what it said and then went to a screen that said windows wasn't shut down right or something like that. Windows will restart automatically. I restart and windows and it keeps coming back to that screen. I looked over everything to make sure I plugged everything in right when I put the computer together. I know it's not a hard drive problem because I put the drive back in this computer and using it. Any suggestions. I am hoping that I just have a case of terminal dumbass and doing something wrong. Just for the heck of it, I put a hard drive in that I had problems with several months ago. I went as far as the windows screen and stopped.

the reason is the windows on the HDD has drivers installed for the system you pulled it out of that do not exist in the new system.

running repair may install the drivers for the new system and should load.

if not try to boot it in safe mode and remove all drivers for components on the old motherboard from device manager
once you reboot windows should load the new drivers needed.

You put your Windows CD in the drive and boot from it, I don't remember the exact point but at the step where you can pick a parition to install it to (or delete/create partitions) you highlight your existing install and press R and it will repair your install.
