There are three (possibly 4) types RAM in computers from about 8 years ago up until the present day.
These are SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3.
They all will only fit in specific slots and will therefore only work with specific computer systems.
Graphics cards also vary. You will have either a PCI-e 16x slot, an 8x AGP slot or no slot at all. You must get a card that fits into one of these.
Other things to note are some cards require a lot of power and, as such, require an additional (sometimes 2) power supply in the form of a 6-pin cable from your PSU.
