New Ram Problems Crashing Comp

my brother just bought this from newegg

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)

and his computer is crashing like 5 mins after it loads up im stumped on what it could be but i think its overheating i dont have any other specs on the comp except its straight from compaq no mods or anything and i think it has a sempron cpu
any ideas?????
 
If it works without the memory installed, then that's obviously the problem. As long as the standard is the same(DDR, DDR2, etc) it shouldn't matter what speed he has. Even if the computer could use DDR400 and he got DDR266, it should work.

My guess is the RAM's just bad. Try and get a replacement, or even another brand. Some motherboards just don't like certain sticks/brands.
 
Is Compaq one of those brands that only likes particular types of RAM? You know, RAM bought from Compaq? It's been a while since I allowed my office to be polluted by one. hehehe. :evil grin:

Try manually setting the speed of the RAM to 266 in the BIOS. That might work. Set it to 3-3-3-8 as well.
