New rig just installing / memory question

Well I bought today p9x79 and intel I7 4930k cpu, I was planning to buy a faster ram, so I picked a 1866 Corsair Vengeance pro 2 x 8 gig for starters,
now when I was buying the whole kit the sales rep tells me that i should get the 1600 mhz ram as I won't be able to run the 1866... I was like what ??,
He said that they are unable to configure the board to read the 1866 Mhz ram,
the cpu is certified for 1866 and the board can go much higher...,
What is the deal here..., is there something I am not aware of or they just pushed the sell on me to get rid of the slower ram..., I hear of people running 2400 mhz ram..
Can someone please help out..

The rep was probably a complete dumb ass. And you should not have listened. Any DDR3 DIMM Non-EEC would work under 2400 MHz (however it wouldn't be able to work stick at the speed, IIRC the max it goes is 1866MHZ without a OC) as the board is rated at that. Return and buy the 1866 kit. You mind linking to the kit you bought, and the 1866 kit?
 
thanks man, yeah this was strange I did my read up about the board before I went to buy the parts so this was completely strange when I heard him saying that , and he swore with his life lol he said ok I will give you the 1866 but you will be back here tomorrow to return it I was like man wtf is up with this guy,
So are you saying that Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866 will be fine in 2x8 configuration ??, I would like to add later on another 16 gig of the same memory... I heard stories that some ram may not work with that board etc., he said none of the ram they had at 1866 would work with this board, this is their website and this is the ram I wanted to get.. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX46064
will that work for sure ?
 
Id just buy as much 1866 as you need, any higher really will have diminishing returns unless you are doing FSB OCing, but the chip is unlocked.

I got the new ram, no problems, the system is running...,
I am just a bit concerned , when I set the bios to its default, I get a cpu fan error in the post and it halts until I enter bios and set the fan on turbo mode then everything is good, the cooling system for the cpu is cooler master Hyper 212 any ideas why on default setting it reports that error..., the bios is up to date , idle cpu temp is 21c , mobo reports at 22 c, the case I have is antec 300 with 4 fans, anymore fans I add and the case will be hovering lol.
Also I got a question about power supply, I have an existing power supply from
my old socket 775 quad core which is 550 watts cooler master, the previous system ran with no problems considering I had 4 hard drives, what I noticed though that the previous board besides the 20 pin atx also had a 4 prong connector , the p9x79 has a plug for 8 prongs and I only plugged the one 4 prong plug , am I missing a connector in my old power supply? do I need a 8 prong connection link ??

any help would be appreciated

When I built my i3 system I bought the Corsair Vengeance 1600s even though it's going to run at 1333 and they worked fine. Later I upgraded to an i5-3570 and I realized that I future proofed the mems because now they're running at 1600.

Whew! :)

By the way, the 8 pin you have are split-able. They're really two 4 pin.

Yes. With a lower end board and CPU you could get away with it, but not with a 4930K. Get a better PSU.
 
You should get a PSU which has the 8-pin EPS connector which you need. Even the lower-end power supplies do these days. The Corsair CX 600M does and that would be a good choice for you if you're looking to upgrade your power supply.
 
True that. The PSU is the heart of the system and vital to its health. It can make you or break you so never skimp on it. Seasonic and Super Flower is the best I know of. The Corsair TX series is made by Seasonic so it's a good choice.

A good PSU have safeguards built in and actually protects the system against power damages and human errors. My PSU covered me twice. Whew!
