New System or Upgrade?

I'm planning on upgrading my system for the steam summer sale and Rome Total War 2

My specs:
i3-2100 | ASUS ENGT430 | HAF 912 | ASRock P67 PRO3 (B3) | CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB | CX500 500W | SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB

I know it's not much, but It was my starting computer. Built 2 years ago. Now I was wondering If I should just upgrade my GPU or if I should buy my friends.

His specs:
i5 2400 l Asus ENGTX 460 l HAF 912 l Gigabyte Z68 l 8GB G.SKILL RAM l 520w Antec HCG l SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB

His was also built about 2 years ago. We were thinking that I could probably get about 250-300$ from some idiot on Craigslist for mine, and he's willing to sell me his for 400-500$. I'm also heading off to college next summer. Now I'm wondering if it is worth it to just sell mine and buy his, or should I just upgrade my GPU and build a brand new system next summer?

Thanks

I say just toss in a good video card in there and you're good to go. A 7850 would work really well in there. How much money are you looking at spending? If you can afford a CPU and GPU you'd be set but even the CPU will still be enough for pretty much all games out right now.

I would say it is not worth the hassle, both systems are very similar the only real stand out difference being the cpu.

I just sold my system with the i3 2100 and it was a great cpu for the price, you are going to have the hassle of selling yours, then paying more for his for mainly the sake of a slightly better cpu.

I would either upgrade your graphics card or wait until you are ready to sell your current pc and build a full new one.

I see no reason to build new. Your system can handle 2500k/2600k CPUs. They are still really good chips. Even in another year. I would grab a new GPU and PSU if necessary. Later on grab a new CPU if you need the extra performance.

i3 2100 is a really good processor man (ESPECIALLY when comparing to my AMD Athlon 1700+ hahaha).

The first thing you should ask yourself is WILL THE GAME work fine with that processor...and considering that i3 2100 has 2 cores of which each has 3.10 ghz and also has 3 MB cache and so on...

...I would say that the games from Steam will work just fine with that CPU.Don't waste money because it's not neccessary ;)

Besides your GPU is also very good lol.Unless if you want EVERY SINGLE GAME TO WORK PERFECTLY WITH ALL SETTINGS ON MAXIMUM...I MEAN ALL SETTINGS AND YES THAT INCLUDES ANTIALISING...then yea...maybe you could buy a new GPU,but honestly...that GPU is awesome (comparing to my super old nVIDIA FX 5200 hahaha) so it will peform VERY good even with all settings on maximum even though you might not want to put antialising settings on maximum, but it really depends on the game.

So yes...your system is VERY GOOD lol.If you ask me...buying all those things new again would be a waste of money lol...
And being honest...I should be the one to buy new hardware lol and not you...:D

God...I am a shame knowing what old PC I have comparing to others here xD

As you can see in my sig I'm running an i3-2105 and it does well. I only do light games so that's moot but the IHDG (on chip graphics) sucks. I got a video card in mine and that's a big improvement.

Compared to your system yeah it's better but honestly the graphics card won't do all that great in main stream gaming and the CPU will hold him back in several games that utilize 4 cores or more.

Thanks everyone. Right it seems as if I am going to just go with a new GPU, and your guys sugestion of the 7850 seems about right. Thanks to all that helped.
