New system

Alright to start, I have nearly absolutely no idea what to pick so I came here.

I am going to give a series of questions and I hope any advice giver would answer them from personal experience. But before that I want to be clear that I DO NOT want a Mac, I prefer the PC, I know enough about computers to make that decision. I realize there are many ways to use a computer, whether for basic needs, entertainment, music, photos, gaming, and possibly more. Now I was hoping for a more all in one computer, but if must know, my primary uses uses would be gaming and basic needs.Basic needs being email, web browsing, word processing, etc. However I do enough of the entertainment, music, and photos to want them included as well. My budget is unlimited, now we arent talking about million dollar supercomputers, but I am willing to pay a lot for the highest quality laptop or desktop. I prefer lots of memory and high tech computers, with great speed as well. This brings me to my first question, laptop or desktop? I don't know a ton about computing but I do know a laptop would be very convienent, however I feel the desktop may be more efficent. Next, what brand? There are so many these days it is hard to decide! (NOT MAC). What type of computer would be good for my needs? I know about memory, graphics cards, cores, blah, but I am no expert so maybe I am not going the right way by saying I want a ton of memory, maybe I don't need a lot. I am not sure, so I ask you.

So recap, no budget, must be PC, laptop or desktop? brand? best to fit my needs?

I appreciate all opinions and help whether I agree with them or not! Any questions feel free to ask!

1. Have you consitered building it yourself? It is much cheaper that way and most people will say it's REALLY easy, plus you know how to fix it when you go to replace/fix somthing, and is 100% customizable.

2. I would suggest desktop for gaming, since there are higher-end components out for desktops than laptops. (What games do you want to play? by you saying your into high-tech, i assume you want to play Crysis, CoD4 and other such high-intensity games, which will require a good-great rig, but can be fairly cheap if built yourself).

3. Do you want to go Intel or AMD
4. Nvidia or ATI

answering those questions will help everybody help you much easier ;)

And if you decided not to build yourself, i suggest somplace like:
cyberpowerpc.com
ibuypower.com

Or, you can go with somthing like alienware.com (very expensive but pretty good quality and style)
I DONT suggest Dell if you plan on keeping this for 3-5 years (this is coming from a current Dell owner that is DESPRATLY working to get a new computer :P)

Good luck!

Q9450/ E8500

WD Raptor x 1, Several Normal SATA HDD

Hign end Xi-fi Sound card
900W PSU

I was in your same situation and the people here helped me design and build my first pc and it really is very easy and very pain free as long as you are confident you can install an OS and drivers correctly. Again though, almost everyone here would be willing to help you if you take that route.

Well thanks a lot guys, but one of my main qustions has yet to be answered, and I apologize for not making it a known concern.

You told me roughly the good brands and companies, what I want to know now are the bad companies to stay away from? and other good ones

Oh yeah, one more thing, who has the best graphics cards? Nvidia, Ati, other?

Thanks for all your help I might build my pc

Personal favour brand -
CPU: intel
MB: Gigabyte
HDD: Seagate
Optical: LG
PSU: http://www.computerforum.com/90116-psu-good-bad-list.html

who has the best graphics cards? Nvidia, Ati, other?

Depends on budget... My personal choice:
Non game - ATI (2600XT or under)
Game - Nvidia (mid-range or high, 8800GS and above.)
Will choose ATI HD3870 only if plan to crossfire

Well I still have no budget and I've been looking at the gaming computer sticky and I might get one of those. However, me and my buddy were talking and he was also looking for a new gaming computer, and I told him about here. He didn't want to sign up but he asked me to ask you what would would be a cheap efficient computer (build or built) the could support a Nvidia 8 or 9 series graphics card (preferably 8800 and up)?

So basically he wants to know the cheapest computer he could get to use a Nvidia 8800 card, he'd like to know the very cheapest and a more balanced one. He'd really appreciate it, and I must say the service here is A++, never got nearly as much help at Bestbuy!

Lol @ Bestbuy.
You actually went there to get help?
Pleaseeee, you actually have to be "stupid" if you want a job there.. someone on the forums posted somewhere a while ago saying that he went for a job there with his experience of building over 10 systems and fixing multple problems and they actually said that he was OVER QUALIFIED for the job and couldn't give it to him. LOL No thats not a joke it's true, i'm sure it's on the forums somewhere.

We need stuff to work around so we need your budget!
It's like sending a 16 year old to get his first car but not tell him how much he can spend.. either the father is going to get mad or they are going to be clueless and go with the most expensive brand out there..

Hope this helps. :)

I think when he said unlimited budget he didnt mean like super expensive. but just the best bang for buck.

Well, if I didn't make myself clear enough, I never did say I wanted to apply for a job there, I said that is where I bought my computers until I became so unsatisfied I came here for help. Secondly, the budget is truely unlimited, I must admit I am aiming for the best bang for the buck, however, I'm prepared to spend up to $10k on this, no joking, I probably won't end up doing that, but just saying. As for my buddy, he has $2k max to spend but I as I previuously posted, he wanted to know from you guys what is the cheapest computer that includes a Nvidia 8800 or higher video card, and what is a still cheap way, but more effiecient, way to have a computer with with Nvidia 8800+ plus in it. If my buddy's request doesn't make since check my next post up, I said it much clearer there.

Not to be rude, but I would like to know what me and my buddy should do, not criticizing me or asking for a budget when I already gave them one, or correcting people when it's a complete waste of a post.

Sorry for any rudeness, but I want to get this done and over with as soon as possible.

Again thanks everyone who has given me help so far, I greatly appreciate it.

+1. 900W might be a bit of a overkill though.

What do you mean by overkill? And I couldnt find the sound card or the first thing, and is this going to be a reliable system, not going to have any problems? My friend may want it cheap, but reliable.

Thanks for all your continued help and support.

take a look at projectwarmachine.com or ibuypower.com or cyberpowerpc.com those are all pretty good places in my opinion

He meant 900W might be unnecassary for that system.

Anyways, the first line of the rig that daisy posted were the processors. one or the other. The q9450 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115039
and the e8500 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036.

The sound card he mentioned was a 'high end x-fi sound card'. X-fi is a chip that makes sounds outta of ur comp sound a lot more clear.
Here is the list :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&N=2010360057 1101019077&bop=And&Order=PRICED

all of them have somewhat a render of the x-fi chip and the 'high end ones' are more 'dough costing'.

hope it answered ur Q's.
