New to gaming....is this a cooling problem?

When I'm playing a game, after several minutes, the computer will shut off completely. It seemed that when I turned my case fans on full speed I was able to play the cod2 demo longer than when the case fans were on 3/4 of full speed. I have an athlon 64 3200 not o/c'ed and a radeon x800 128mb which is also not oc'ed. The cpu is using the stock hsf with the included amd thermal pad. What should I do? Would a new hsf solve my problem....my case temps seem pretty steady at around 32C but I have checked my cpu temp after exiting the game and it is usually around 55C.

The CPU is getting rather warm... 60*C is the max temp for most AMD's. It could also be a power issue, but I'd check your temps more first...perhaps try to upgrade the cooler.

yes, definitely...you can get a relatively inexpensive thermaltake hs and fan for about 20 bucks, and get some arctic silver compound. i always thought thermal pads werent such a great idea. also, it could be something as simple as location. if its in a desk or stuck in between stuff wehere there isnt much circulation, it will heat up really fast.

Your tower should have free unrestricted air space around it, at least 10-12 inches, Case fans should be lint free as much as possible. Cables, wires should not be restricting air movement.
