New to High Spec Desktops

Hey guys, just joined this forum to try learn some more about desktop specs.

Im currently looking to find a solid desktop unit to use for my design course in college (CAD, solidworks, photoshop, illiustrator etc) aswell as for some gaming purposes. Im not exactly sure what to look for in regards to processor and GFX card needs so was wondering if anyone could take a look at this desktops spec and point me in the right direction?

Ok so, the specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU 2.4 GHz
Windows 7 64-Bit
600GB Hard Drive
4GB DDR2 Corsair RAM 2 more slots avilable on the motherboard.
GeForce GTX260 2GB RAM (Limited Edition)

It also comes with:

2 Monitors, a 21 inch samsung sycnmaster widescreen, and a 18in phililips.
Razer Deathadder mouse and mousemat
Razer Lycosa keyboard
and an Alienware Aurora case

Just wondering if this is all worth the 400e price tag? Seems good to me after looking up prices of the extras alone, but I dont really know about the specs and such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.
 
It's an all right computer, but very outdated. Old CPU, old DDR2 RAM, old video card. CAD is extremely resource-dependent, and it may run slowly on this computer. Do you have a certain budget?
 
oh crap really? According to the seller it will run newest games perfectly and same with solidworks/photoshop..

Well its really only for projects in college and some games, have my laptop for everything else so im trying to not spend over 400 or so. Looking at used models as they are a lot cheaper, and this package seemed great because of the extras!

What would you suggest I look for?
 
I'm not saying it will run new games badly, it just won't be the highest settings or anything. But for CAD and photoshop, you might see some high rendering times.

And 400e means euros, right?
 
Well i guess with my budget I wont be looking for the highest settings? Ah right yeah ok I get what you mean. Yes, sorry, I mean euros. There isnt the widest selection of stuff on the site im looking at but its the cheaper option to try get a decent unit plus a monitor or that.
 
The price isn't that bad for it since it comes with a monitor and a nice mouse and keyboard. But for upgrades, you would'nt be able to do much since the motherboard is out of date. Might be able to upgrade the video card in the future, but depends on your power supply. Of course that wouldn't matter with photoshop and CAD.
 
Ah ok didnt really factor in upgrading the motherboard etc.. My thinking was to get this package for doing what I need for the next 6 months (college, light gaming etc.) then probably replace the unit, keeping the rest of the stuff seen as the monitor looks like a great model, same with the mouse and keyboard. Looked them up and the 3 of them alone cost nearly 300e I think. As for just working with models in solidworks (not render times or that) do you think it will work smoothly? My laptop is only a Intel U4100 1.3ghz and it can run solidworks just creating models smooth enough for a while?

I have no experience in solidworks, so I'll leave that to another member. But comparing the core2 quad to a u4100, it'll blow it out of the water, especially paired with an actual video card.
 
Ah sorry well I think its a less resource intensice 3d modelling program. Oh yeah I know that, but as a first desktop to build from Id guess 400 isnt too bad considering the extras? As long as I can run solidworks/photoshop etc for as long as I want without having to reset the comp (which tends to happen with laptop) and play a few games id be happy.
