New Vid Card, restarts in games

Hey everyone,

I just got a new video card for my computer, i used to have a Radeon X700, a mate of mine just bought a dx10 card so he gave me his nvidia 7900gt, it worked fine in his computer. before changing the cards over i ran 3dmark05, worked fine and it gave me a score, i put in the new nvidia 7900gt, tried to run 3dmark05 and everytime it crashes and restarts at different points through the test (both video card testing and cpu testing). I installed the demos of V8 supercars 3 and colin mcrae: dirt, i play them for a while then the computer crashes and restarts, again at different points (during races, in menu's, etc) I'm trying to figure out why this is happening, I'm thinking along the lines of power supply, not enough for the new card???....

here are the specs of my comp:
Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz
1GB DDR Ram (2 x 512mb)
Abit Fatality AA8XE
XFX Nvidia GeForce 7900GT
440W power supply
160GB SATA HDD
DVD burner
2 case fans 5" (roughly)

my mates computer has a 550w power supply, core2duo e6600, 2gb ram, and used to have the geforce 7900gt

what do you guys think?

Any help much appreciated.
Dave.

I also have a 7900GT but I don't have any of your problems. Disable automatic restart, and see what is bringing windows to its knees.

Yeah, it does sounds like it's the PSU, like GCR said, what are the amps on the 12 v rail(s)...

I have a 7950 GT 512MB and I have 380watt PSU, with 17A on 12v1 and 17A on 12v2...

Since he doesn't seem to reply too quick, let's ask all questions in one post.

What brand PSU?
12v Rail amps?
Did you try disabling Auto restart?

This may sound too obvious, but did you uninstall the drivers for your x700 before installing your new graphics card? Have you installed the latest drivers for your 7900gt?

hey, sorry for the late reply, i've been at work....

its a 400w not a 440w as i mentioned above
ok the brand is FSP
Model: fsp-400w-60thn-p
+12v1 - 14.0A
+12v2 - 15.0A
-12v - 0.5A

I had a look through bios, where do u disable the auto reboot?

Yeah I uninstalled the drivers before taking the old card out and then put the new card in and downloaded the latest drivers from the nvidia web site.

thanks again for your help.
dave.

ok, i found out where the option to turn of reboot when an error occurs...

so it crashed, blue screened and said its usual message with the problem being Memory_Management....

hope this helps,
cheers
dave.

yeah i plugged in the power to the video card, my power supply doesn't have the connector as standard, but there was an adaptor in the box from the 4 prong to the smaller video card power size....
