New Video Card Issue

Hey everyone, Been a watcher for some time but this is my first thread; thanks for looking.

I bought a PNY GeForce 7600GT from reading post on this forum. I assumed that I would be able to play Farcry on its highest settings but when it auto detects my computers abilities it comes up with all low settings. What could the problem be? I have an Antec 450W power supply. I have checked and found that even when playing a game the fan on the PSU never comes on. Could it be that the cards not geting enough power because the PSU is getting to hot?

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

is your pc detecting your card? if so it sounds like the stock fan has died try going into your device manager to make sure the card is being detected if not try scanning for new hardware and if nothing comes up make sure the card is properly installed like pressed down in the slot firm...if all this fails you may have a dead card hope something helps you

Yes, the computer is detecting the card. But it's just not performing like I think it should. Does anyone know if the 7600GT should play Farcry on its highest settings or only low settings like its doing for me?

The fan on the card is working fine, possible the fan on the PSU is shot. I'll have to check it some more to see if it ever kicks on. I might just be checking when its not really hot. I have checked it when just finishing playing a game when I assume it's going to be hot but the fans not spinning.

I have 1 gig of ram, that should be fine right?

Thanks

that card can definitely play far cry maxed and 1 gig of ram is fine for most games (BF2 being an exception)....can you manually change the settings after it detects them as being low? it could be a driver issue as well and my mistake i thought you said the card fan was not kicking on...if thats the case then its the power supply if it doesn't work then your card isn't getting proper power and won't function as it should

Yes, I can manually change the settings but it makes no difference in quality. I have obtained the latest drivers from nVidia website so thats ok i guess. I guess I will just have to buy a new PSU and see if that fixes the problem. Any recommendation that dont break the bank but are sufficient?

I forgot to mention earlier that a couple times the game would just shut down just as I begin to play and go to the desktop very quickly.

Thanks for the replies Maddhatter

i doubt it's the powersupply's fault, as my friend has that psu and he runs 7800gt, gig of ram, amd 62 3500+ no problem. The back fan on the PSU isn't suppose to come on unless it gets really hot, the inner fan is the one that's always running.

Well then I'm still at a loss for whats wrong.

So could the card just be bad since it is not performing like it should?

Any idea why a game would close out and go to the desktop for no reason?

So there is an internal fan in the PSU which always runs?

it very well could be the PSU the game crashing could be from overheating and if the fan turns on the card it might not be getting enough juice from the power supply to turn fast enough to keep the card cool...i would try another power supply personally and if thats not the issue then return it and you know for sure its your card
