Hey all iv just bought a gtx 260 fo my current set up.

I put it in, connected the 6 pin conenctor from my old card into the new one, and then used a 4 pin, to 6 pin adapter and used that as the secnd power connector. i Turned my computer on but nothing in terms of visuals, i then tested the 4 pin to 6 pin o nm y old gpu and that worked.

What could be the problem?

have i missed anything? do i have to do anything before taking my old gpu out?

Do you have a motherboard speaker installed? Is the computer posting with the new GPU?
It might be a bad gpu, the best way to know that is connecting it to a different computer and see if that works.

PSU should provide enough juice... I'd say update the bios first. If you still can't make it work, see if you can test the GPU in a newer computer. I'm not sure of the age of that board right off, but I've seen some older boards (typically around the Pentium D era) that wouldn't accept most any newer card.

Iv had a look online and a lot of people have used the same board as me and successfully ran the moterboard i have.

I bought the gpu off of a guy who swears it was working flawlessly and after emailinghim about the problem he was very helpful so i dont think hes ripped me off or anything.

@mihir im not sure what you mean by a mobo speaker or posting? :S

Could it be that the card is not getting enough juice because of the connectors i have as i am not using proper 6 pin pcie connectors im using an adapter that only has one 4 pin on one end and one 6 pin on the other.

I ask this as iv checked online and all the pcie adapters i have seen have 2x 4 pin adapters into one 6 pin connector

That PSU has 2 x PCie power cables, why are you using a molex connector? It should work either way, but I would use the actual PCIe power connector first.

Reset the CMOS and try again.

How do i reset the cmos? and how could this potentially get the gpu to work?

And i bought the pc used, so the second pcie connector isnt actually there. (im going out today to buy one if i can find one)

My mobo also has 2 pcie slots as it is crossfire enabled, could i try the other pcie slot and see if that works or is the other one only for an sli'd gpu?

Unplug the computer. Remove the CMOS battery (looks like a watch battery), hold down the power button for 10 secs. Wait 10 minutes. Replace battery and power and try again. Enter bios (usually the del key on start) then load default settings and make sure boot priority is set to your hard drive, restart. Post results.

I get no output from the monitor with the gpu so i cant go into the bios.

This is why i asked if it was an issue with power?

Iv just read online that updating the bios can sometimes sort compatibility issues out, i have an older bios revision, how safe am i to update and could someone run me through a step by step guide.

This is the link to my mobo downloads, what do i need off there?

No, iv not tried anything with the gpu this monring as my sons up and runnign about :P, im just nipping out to get this cable if i can and see if that works first then ill reset the cmos.

Quick update, iv tried the new lead...didnt work, the fan was running but very very slowly, there was no beep or anything like that and i tried every different connector from my psu...no output still, no nothing.

Even though people have used a gtx 260 on my mobo in the past could it be possible than mine just simply isnt compatible with the gpu?

Does it sound like a dead card? Or something else?
