new video PC

Hi,I want to build a new PC for video editing, mostly using Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects.
Now AMD or Intel??Which board and CPU??

I lost track of all those CPU so I dont know real difference between Pentium 4 Extreme ed.,Pentium D etc..

If you are doing some video capturing as well as editing you will want a somewhat work horse setup without needing a super cost. Being an AMD fan here I could point you at several single and dual cored model cpus and some Asus as well as MSI brand boards. First you need to have an idea of the budget you are working with. For video and sound cards alike you can go with the latest or go for an older model card that will do quite well for this at a much lower cost.

The best way would be to get an Intel Core 2 Duo, but if you have a low budget, the AMD X2 would be a decent option.

Personally with the amount of video capturing and editing done here periodically the Opteron server type cpu or dual core models offers the means to handle the draw on system resources while background services and apps are still running. When working with video you can easily put a good sized load on the cpu almost equivalent to some high end gaming. Some will point at the AM2 type right away due to performance reviews while work loads are still quite a bit different from the gaming scene. Cpu cooling will come into this like OCing however. When loading the cpu for hours at a time you will want to see the temps kept down.

Thank you guys.My budget would be around $1000 as I can get some parts from my old PC like HDD,DVD-RW..
I don't need latest graphic card either.

Just good board and CPU.I don't know which would be better AMD or Intel.
How do you actually count a speed of CPU in Dual-Core.Say I have 3.2 GHZ Dual Core CPU and 3.2Ghz CPU Pentium 4 would be speed same(I know that Dual Core will be faster, right??).
What about AMD.Will be 2.8Ghz CPU same as 2.8Ghz Pentium??
Could you point me to specific CPU and board, please??

With $1000 as your budget, I would definatley go with an Intel Core 2 Duo.

AMD cpus are known to ring circles around Intel models quite often. As far as dual core cpus the concept there is be able to multitask while a single core model would bind up. You gain speed over the single core model operating at the same frequency trying to load a large program with others running at the same time along with background services.

an Athlon XP 2400+ is the equivilant to an 2.4Ghz Pentium 4.
apj shoots himself

should read
Some AMD cpus are known to ring circles around some Intel models quite often. But some Intel cpus are know to run circles around some AMD models, whilst the C2D range runs rings around most of amd models

Thank you guys again.
Of course I dont have to spend whole budget.
And dont want to get in Intel vs. AMD but wchich one would you recomend better, could you give me specific CPU and the board??

Thank you very much

There are a number of Intel and AMD cpus alike that will handle video editing alone as long as you select a good make and model board to put in on. In fact there's a sticky right on the forum that can help with tips on building a budget system that will handle the basics with no hogh end gaming intended.http://www.computerforum.com/16363-building-computers-101-a.html

For better make boards you can look over names like Asus. MSI, Gigabyte, and a few others. For boards that offer less and seem a little behind Abit, DFI, and a couple of other makes offer reliable boards for budget systems. The "personal" preference here as a tech is a look over of Asus and MSI models in particular for a 2007 build being planned where video capturing and editing along with other things that put a good load on the system is being taken into account there. But that will now see a delay since a new case is currently needed to replace the 80mm fanned model here with 120mm dual fanned ThermalTake model for keeping a case cool in a confined space. AMD will still be the preferred brand cpu in the new build. On a tight buget you could easily go with an AMD64 Atholon 3500+ Venice 2.2ghz model upto the 3800+ single cored. On better spend a 3800+ X2 dual cored cpu upto the 4400+ where the price is still up there. For a large budget ready to spend around $1,000 the Opteron server type cpu Socket 939 or 940 models will handle the heavy loads with more stability with the dual cored models available there too. The Intell P4 line of cpus list the higher speeds but not the higher operating temps they see. Both AMD with the new AM2 and Intel are coming out with models that use a lower voltage to operate at the same frequencies seen with the 32bit models.

thanks,
I am using laptop with Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz CPU.
I want to sell it and just build tower PC.
I'm still confused about those CPU clocks.
If I have 3.2 Pentium 4 will be less faster than say athlon 64 3800+??

I'm just trying to understand those clocks.I will probably go with AMD than Intel.
