New Wireless Router - WHAT AM I MISSING?

Hi y'all - I've got a LITTLE experience - enough to know when to stop and ASK an EXPERT...so if y'all don't mind? I need some input on a problem I have.

I have a Gateway GT5056 that I bought at Best Buy July 2006. I have comcast cable internet connection and I JUST got a Dell laptop. I want to make my house wireless, so I can use my laptop here in the house. I bought a NETGEAR Rangemax Next Wireless Router and proceeded to follow the instructions for getting everything online and hooked up....

Internet won't connect? No Internet connection, someone isn't talking to someone else (computer not talking with router? or modem not talking with router, or ???? WTF???)

I can only assume that I'm missing something vital for these darn things to work. Can someone please tell me?

The Gateway is using XP???

HELP!!! PLEASE! THANK YOU:(:o

So the PC used to plug straight into the modem?

You put the original ip numbers from the PC into the router?

You changed the PC to new settings (dhcp)?

Can you see the router from the PC?

I'm assuming a cat 5 link from PC to router, right?

More info, I'm sure someone here will figure it out.

THANK YOU for responding, I do appreciate it.

Yes, desktop pc attached to cable modem, with ethernet cable - standard, and yes, I know how to set that up (fairly simple even for me, a somewhat tech challenged person).

Ok, like I said, I'm not a techie - I know enough to ask when I don't know what's happening (and to get completely frustrated when "simple to install" is NOT simple at all), but all I did was follow the instructions, installed everything that I was told to install...using the installation CD's and connecting the router as I was told to

The problem is that the light for the "INTERNET" connection does not come on.

I bought a Belkin G the FIRST time around....and it would work for 3 seconds and then not work - This NETGEAR N has not connected AT ALL.

I asked Gateway, and they are trying to sell me a wireless card for my desktop, but when I bought the desktop, I was told the only thing I needed when I wanted to go wireless was the wireless router.

So, I'm at a standstill. I don't know anything about the technical side of inputting info into the router - i.e. IP numbers or settings. I haven't a clue - that is BEYOND my capabilities.

Also, I live in no mans land, and can't count on Comcast or anyone local to do what I need to do, that I trust to do it correctly.

I guess I just need to know what to do now?:confused::confused:

Ok we need to run over a few things before we start assuming...

So Comcast Cable?

Did the cable work with the PC when it was directly connected to the modem?

Are you trying to plugin like this?
Modem -->Router ---(Wireless Connection1)-->Laptop ---(Ethernet Connection1)-->Desktop

What is the model of you laptop, does it list anywhere it has a wireless G or B or A or A/B/G?

What is the router broadcast letter A?B?G? N? We need to make sure they broadcast and receive on the same channel..

If you want to walk through it on a messenger service email me TroyTowner @ Gmail.com (Without the spaces).

YES, cable has always worked with the PC - it is working with the PC NOW.

I followed instructions for setting up the router to work with the computer and modem the way it stated on the CD that came with my NETGEAR wireless Router. I don't think the modem and router are working together but I don't know why?

What is the model of you laptop, does it list anywhere it has a wireless G or B or A or A/B/G? Laptop is a Dell 1521 Inspiron with a wireless card - but until I get home and look, I don't know what type.

What is the router broadcast letter A?B?G? N? We need to make sure they broadcast and receive on the same channel.. The newest router is a Netgear N - I had purchased a Belkin G - again, I will have to look when I get home.

When I get home this evening, I will give you a yell if you don't mind :) thanks
