Newb looking to upgrade RAM

I was wondering if someone could help me figure out if I am on the right track before I purchase a few sticks of RAM to try and speed up my PC. Here is what I know about my current setup:

AMD Athlon XP-A, 2166 MHz (6.5 x 333) 3000+
nVIDIA nForce2 IGP Chipset
512 MB (DDR SDRAM) in 1 memory slot

I would like to up my RAM in an attempt to speed up this machine - it seems have been slowing down heavily over the last 2 years. I can no longer rip and burn discs AND surf the web at the same time - it is way tooo slow.

Should I just get a 1 GB stick for the empty slot or should I yank the 512 and put in two 1 GB sticks? Is this right type to get:

hi,if u are just going to use it for surfing the web and burning disks and the odd game maybe just buying another 1gb stick of ram will be ok. also if your harddrive is really full that might be slowing down your pc. if it is just deleate any programs that you dont need anymore. programs use ram even if u arnt on them so it might be best just to clean your hard drive that can speed up your coputer by miles.

I would get a 1GB stick and keep the 512 right where it is. If you are unsure about if the RAM is right then go to www.crucial. com scan your computer and they will show you what kind of RAM you need and they will give you the option to purchase from them. Best part is they are pretty cheap

Bengal you never mix 2 different types of RAM

if you know what your doing your ok but only if they are running at the same speed
All RAM in a given system runs at the same speed, timings and voltage. Whether all of those are supported at a given value depends on the RAM. The slowest speed and timings between the 2 sets are used.

An extra 1GB stick would definitely help; I personally would get one of those because I'm cheap and don't care about best possible performance. By getting two same-sized sticks, however, you can have your memory in dual-channel, which will increase memory bandwidth; you won't get massive performance gains, though. As a matter of fact, you probably won't see any real-world performance gains unless you do some heavy gaming - which you won't with that computer.
