Newbe Needs Some Help

This is my first time building a computer for myself and I am somewhat hardware illiterate. I will be using this for Photoshop, AutoCAD, Rhino, and maybe eventually video editing and gaming if I get some free time. I currently have a DELL laptop 700MHz P3, 128MB ram and that isn't even coming close to cutting it and my moms Gateway P4 2.4, 768MB ram is kind of slow too. This is what I was thinking for my new setup:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Clawhammer core
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
Corsair XMS, Xtra-Low Latency 1GB PC-3200
WD 80GB 7200RPM SATA (maybe a Raptor if I can afford it)
Chaintech NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT
Lite-On CDRW-DVD Combo
HP DVDRW w/ LightScribe
Mitsumi Floppy Drive
400W PS
2 120mm case fans

Will this setup cut it or is maybe overkill? I'd rather spend a little bit of extra money now instead of having to worry about upgrading in a year and it costing even more money.

The 3500+ is powerful but for the stuff you are doing an intel with HT will be much better.
If you are paying a lot extra for the low latency ram you should go back to normal stuff because lower latency's won't make a huge difference.
If you are only going to do gaming occasionally you may not need a GeForce 6800Gt You should put the money into a better processor/more ram or perferrably (from my point of view) raid.
I think raid 5 is the best raid and that would be much better than a raptor (in storage and it could still hold up in speed). You sould google raid 5 (or just raid so you can see all of them) and see if you like one.
If you are paying a lot for a SLI motherbord you can down grade a bit.
Other than that it looks good.

My budget is around $1500. This setup with shipping is around $1550.
3500+ is $267.00 in the Retail box.
Memory is $243.47
6800GT is $188.50
Mobo is $199.00

Whoa those are old :P Havnt seen a 3500 clawhammer for a long time

RAID is a hardware setup, the Raptor is a drive ... I dont see the relation

6800GT is $188.50
You sure about that?

we have't heart 3500+ in our country at present...
What country might that be?

I was thinking the Clawhammer core because thats what the FX's are running, but I guess not. What is better, Winchester or Newcastle? If I go Intel instead, what processor would you recommend?
Whinchester is the newest :)

I think Praetor meant that if I used a RAID 5 setup for my hds then it will have about the same performance as a raptor
Raptors arent that good :P Consider something like Maxtor's 16MB drives .... those are already within spitting distance of the Raptors ... so a RAID5 8MB drive will easily outpace Raptors in burst (you wont notice more 1sec improvement between anything really running normal day to day apps)

Also I meant the 6600GT is $188.50, not the 6800GT.
Ah big price difference :P

I have a few question about the Clawhammer 3500+. I noticed that this is what newegg just started to sell. Now according to all the cpu charts I seen the clawhammer dont even come in 3500+. It comes accroding to what I read in 2800,3000,3200,3400,3700,4000, fx-53, fx-55. So is the 3500+ a old cpu that just not mention anywhere I looked or is this really a new cpu or is this a mistake by newegg.

this the link to what newegg selling

Hehe the charts dont list a 3300+ either but it exists

Everyone is familiar with the Newcastle and Winchesters because by the time the Newcastles came out A64 was a bit more mainstream (with respect to S939). However the mainstream Athlon64 was initially relased as a Clawhammer (thus making the only difference between the Athlon64 and the Athlon64 FX being the uplocked multipliers or lack thereof). AMD realized that they could improve yields without killing performance by cutting the cache in half (if you look through history, AMD and Intel do this all the time). The difference between now and then (history) is that the performance drop from going from 1MB to 512K L2 is that it really is a small performance drop -- due in part to the on-die memory controller (for reference sake it was not as small for something like P3-Klamath to P3-Coppermine).

The 3500 clawhammers can be identified by ADA3500DEP5A[some letter]

Why is everyone going and saying he should get a amd 3500+? He said he was using his computer for Photoshop, AutoCAD and Rhino and an intel with HT would do much better in these kinds of programs. with 1150$ I don't think raid 5 will be an option so you might as well just get one drive. I think a 550/550J @ $278 or a 640 @ $273 would work well with your budget. I just took those from the price list here
http://www.intel.com/intel/finance/pricelist/
I think only spending around 275$ for the processor would be a good idea because you might also want 758 to 1024 Mb or ram.

actually AMD has always done better in AutoCAD than Intel

Well then it depends what he does more of. Either way that is still a 2v1 for intel. (unless I'm wrong about rhino and photoshop)

I think why most people going amd here is because that what he showed intrest in, in the orginal post. Most people try to work with what the person think he want rather then completly choosing for him. At least that what I think is the reason. Truthfully he be happy with the performance with the 3500+ in all those things. Maybe intel can do some things slightly better that he want to do but I doubt it be majorly noticed.

I don't really care what brands I end up with. Pretty much I just want the best performance I can get for the money.
