NewBee - First Build

Hello all. I hope you can answer my question.

As the title says, I'm a newbee and in the process of my first build. I have all components assembled and have 1 problem.

How do I load the Operating System/software when my keyboard isn't working because I don't have the keyboard software loaded yet? I have to hit Any Key or the Del key before windows will load.

Thanks for any help.

You don't need the keyboard software loaded. If you have a usb keyboard all you need to do is use a ps2 type keyboard and make sure that the option in the bios to for usb legacy(or usb keyboard) is enabled. Then remove it and plug in your usb keyboard, boot to the install cd and then follow the prompts. The special buttons will only work while within windows anyway.

Have you tried Just pluging in your keyboard - it should be recognized by your USB or PS/2 port.

re:O/S - you should be able to put the disk / CD in your drive - and it walks you through the install process. You might have to use your keyboard to enter the BIOS and change the boot sequence to DVD or CD ( Windows 7 RC needs a DVD drive ) drive as first option rather than off the HDD.

To enter your BIOS - you would have to press DEL or ESC or other key. It'll say in your MOBO manual what key to press for BIOS screen.

I have a wireless keyboard. I plug the infared detector in but I still get the :

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Media in selected Boot device and press a key" error.

My machine doesn't recognize my boot disk or my keyboard.

I know both my disc and keyboard are good.

You don't have it set to boot to cdrom first. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and never had a problem installing windows. Most likely you need to use a ps/2 keyboard and enable usb keyboard in bios.

I'm suppose to hit the Del button but my machine doesn't recognize my keyboard. My keyboard has a USB infared detector. My machine also doesn't recognize my boot disc.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000. Is this ps/2?

PS2 plugs into this

It would be easier and quicker to borrow a ps/2 keyboard from someone.

Yeah - if you have an old Dell or HP keyboard laying around from an older PC.

I've got 3 unused low end keyboards left over. Do you have an old PC where you can grab the keyboard from and plug it in to get your PC setup?

Okay, I got my PC to recognize my keyboard. Now how to I get my PC to recognize my DVD as the boot drive? I go to the Boot Sequence page of the BIOS and it only has 1 selection which is "1st floppy Drive". My PC doesn't have a floppy drive.

You should have like 3 line items to enable so you can have floppy, cdrom, hdd. It's possible you aren't in the right option.

Could it be that under "system information" of the CMOS Setup Utility it does not list my DVD player or Hard Drive? Therefore it can't boot from them? Maybe under the CMOS Utility setup for "Integrated Peripherals? and then "I/O Devices"? Probably not because it only lists options like
[3F8/IRQ4].

Any Suggestions?

Now remember, I am a newbee at this and know very little about computers. So this next question may seam rather elementary so please bare with me.

I'm seeing and reading everywhere about connecting an IDE cable to the DVD player. My DVD player, as far as I can tell, doesn't have an IDE connector. It has a SATA connector. Am I missing something? Do all DVD players have an IDE connector?

I also looked at my bios and it doesn't recognize anything for IDE or SATA (Primary, Seconday, Master ...). Maybe this will give you a clue what is wrong.

I'm going crazy with this final problem!!!

IDE is old, sata is the new standard for dvd drives and hard disc drives.

Thanks, that's what I thought but needed to ask for piece of mind.

So why doesn't my PC recognize my SATA drives?
