Newbie Help

Ok after spending all my free time in the past 24hrs reading on here and as many of the 101's I could I now have more insight on computer building and have to say you guys are amazing with your knowladge.

I have a few questions I need to ask before I can plan my build.

First of all I dont have a single game loaded on my PC it is a pure work machine. Here is what I do with my computer.

I will have Photoshop CS2 processing 100 raw images (20 min task), uploading images (8 megs each) to the lab via Satalite, and backing up files to an external S ATA Drive.

Now that being said my Dell is very slow doing this and maybe no system will be faster but that is the way I use a pc, if I play a game its on the XBox, or Game Cube :D

So my questions are;

Is Pentium D the way for me to go?

Do you select a mobo, or processor first, then match to the other?
I may have missed it in the 101's but what do the socket numbers (754/939) mean?

pentium D would be a great processor for what you do. make sure you get a mobo with an intel945 or higher chipset or a nforce4. they are compatible with the new pentium D's
 
pentium d all the way. the pent d is a workhorses best friend. i recommend the mobo selection first b/c theres more of an option with it. Alanuofm is right about the chipset and the socket is critical to the processor. for example,the motherboard has to have a 754 socket to work with a 754 socket processor. it basically is how the processor plugs into the motherboard. make sure the mobo and processor have the same socket number.

If your budget can support it ... the Athlon64 X2 is a superior choice but if not, the PentiumD will get the job done

Cant remember if i covered it in cpu101 or not but the numbers indicate the number of pins the motherboard/cpu have

Hahahahahaha lemme teach you a few things
1. Spamming a thread RIGHT AFTER and Admin posts constitutes to STUPID
2. Regardless of what activists and purists say should or should not be, STUPIDITY is looked down upon (aka "lack of respect")
3. You're being STUPID if you think a simple tag like "silver member" will garner any respect.
4. Annoying admins is not conducive to respect nor longevity. This will stop now.
