Ok first off, hi my name is Bill and I live in Washington State. With that said, here are my questions. I am either going to choose a P4 3.6 HT 560j socket 775 prescott chip or an AMD FX-53 socket 940 chip. I will be using my computer for pretty much everything. Internet, some gaming, movies, word processing you name it. Since I dont know what chip I want to go with, could someone help me pick out a suitable mother board for each chip? My budget is no more than $140 for the board.

This is what I had in mind for my system:

P4 3.6 socket 775 or AMD FX-53 socket 940 chip
2GB RAM
120GB HD
450W PS
DVD burner
CD burner
250mg zip drive
256mb video
Audio blaster sound card of some type

The only real drawback I see to the Intel chip is that the socket 775 cards use pci-express video and not agp, so a decent video card is going to cost more.

First off, even though i think Intel is the best, i would choose the FX-53 over the 3.6Ghz Intel. As for the board, im not quite sure, go to www.newegg.com--> computer hardware---> AMD Motherboards, then select the socket and what you want.

Dont get that FX53. Unless you really want to delve into the server board market

Well if you're considering a 6600class videocard, it will cost less for PCIe.

But have a look at the CPU101 so you can pick a processor first

I would go with the FX53, but for Socket 939. S940 is kinda phased out now, S939 will be here for a while (A couple years, hopefully). It will be much easier and less costly if you go with S939. Also, about the video card, if I were you, I'd wait till the next gen of cards come out (if you'll be able to afford one, I'm guessing they'll be around 700). Even that's too much dough for a card, I'd still wait, because the price of the current ones will drop drastically at that time.

Oh, and also, there's no real reason to get 2GB of ram. Use some of the money you save on that for a better video card. Another thing, you might want to get a mini USB drive rather than a zip drive. It will be able to hold more (depending on what you get), and it will probably be faster. I have a 1GB stick, and I love it, use it all the time.
