Newbie needs a New PC

I have just recently become interested in tinkering with computers and my current 5 year old HP is feeling very slow and outdated. I was looking at off the shelf PCs and was wondering if should go that route or build my own. I have a $600 budget, it would mainly be used for storing and watching HD movies or streaming HD movies to my PS3 and internet surfing. I would also like Windows 7 so that would have to be figured into the price. I also don't need a flashy led lit case, and wouldn't be against gutting my HP case and using that. Any suggestions?
