Hi all i really need your help and i hope my lack of knowlege of what im talking about doesnt confuse you,

right here go,
in my comp - desktop there is a main fan blowing on a real big heat sync, under that is a square thing that is glued to the bottom of the heat sync, well this square thing that i can guess is the cpu plugs in to a socket with all of its many (prob over a 100) prongs, well a few of them are bent and iv tried to straighten the few that were bent but what i am asking is how do i make my computer work again?

is the cpu prongs real important as it all fits back inthe little holes but wen i turn my comp back on nothing comes up onthe screan, and i have tried holding the shift buttons to open windows insafe mode but it just sits there with the fan going but no action.

please say i can fix it, or just buy a new cpu for real cheap and not have to buy a new comp?????

HELP!!!!

they are probaly bent from being forced in rather than using the allignment arrows to put it in, you wil need a new processor and it should slide inwith little force.
Also, ground yourself when touching the processor or many other computer parts because they will likely be damaged from your static electricity

oh bollox, ok cheers, do i need a certain type of processor to match what i have in my comp, basically another one of what i had, or can i just get a better one of different make and just fit it and make it work?

would the one that i have just broken have a serial number on it that i can quote to a computer shop (like pc world) and they will now what im chatting about or if i can just get a new one what is a good place to get one from and what is a good make/model, i dont wanna spend that much as i only use it for internet and downloading stuff not games or big software stuff like video editing,

cheers for your help

oh just thought would maplins sell what i am looking for?

Hey Mate,

Well, by the sounds of it, you've buggered your CPU...

Were they bent before you took it out, as, it didn't work then?

If you could get a picture of the top of the CPU, so that we can tell what type it is, we'll be able to advise you on a new one to get! :)

By the way, dude, don't go to PC World, I went asking them how to get a hard drive out of an old generic Compaq case, and they said smash it with a hammer! Seriously!

Also, Maplins... Don't bother, limited and over-over-over priced!

www.ebuyer.com ;)

If the cpu looks like what is seen in the image here it will be an AMD model cpu since the pins are on the cpu chip itself and not the socket like Intel models.

The make and model system would be a great help since then a replacement cpu could be recommended according to the specifications found.

yeah it looks like that with lots of prongs with a space in the middle but in the middle is some big square things,im trying to get a picture but its like the one in the picture above, ok i wont go to pc world, i think i have 800fsb and i think its a 2.6 or 2.8 with 512 cashe or something i remember reading somthing like tat wen i bought it 4 yrs ago

An 800mhz fsb with DDR400 memory sounds more like an Intel P4 model seeing the higher cpu clock speed of 2.6-2.8ghz. Was this for a prebuilt system or a custom build?

Kornowski can help you there with finding a good replacement at a U.K. vendor once the model can be identified.

its off a dell, pre built computer, i have not changed anything since i bought it, i have looked at the cpu and there is no markings on it. dont take those numbers as gospel as i mite be very confused,

Right on the face of the main case itself you should see the model number. That can be looked up to see what it came with when new. It will likely turn out to be a Socket 478 model since the AMD 754s only saw upto 2.4ghz for a top cpu speed.

Was it broke before you took it out?

Anyway, if you could get a picture of both sides of it, that'd be great!

YES it looks like that,im sorry with my descriptions but i am a real newbie when it comes to computers.

It is a dell dimention 2400 and i have found a intel pentium 4 sticker on the front of the case, so it looks like i have a weird pentium and not an AMD

Where can i look up what thi has when it was new? or can someone find it for me?

thanks

As in like this? http://www.dansdata.com/images/i845s/p4pins440.jpg[/QUOTE]

sorry no it was working fine but the inside of my computer was full of dust and it smelt a little of burning, the dust heating up, so i took the side off and got all the dust out, there was alot on the heat sync, as the fan blows on to it so i hoovered the heat sync and must have knocked the cpu underneith and bent one of the little prongs.

i have bben searching a few other forums and i think its a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 533MHz FSB something like that i dont have the other page up,

does this sound like i know what im talking about or completely wrong.

looking on ebuyer for that kinda thing, oh would there be any other parts that would break if the cpu didnt work like the ram or something??

Well, for a start, you don't want to hoover in your computer, this'll build up static electricity, which aint gonna do your computer any favours!

Do you have any friends that may have a spare CPU to try before you buy one?

First you may want to look over the specifications seen at http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/specs.htm

That won't do cwwoodley any good since newegg doesn't ship to the U.K.. The specifications there show what is supported when you go to see what is available at the present time for the old Dell model there.

Kornowski is in the better position to point out where to buy a replacement. Since the system likely came with just 512mb of memory installed you may want to considering adding another 512mb dimm in or buying a new pair of PC2700 512mb dimms to see the 1gb max. along with the replacement cpu.

I never said he should buy the replacement from newegg, I was just linking to a site with the specs easily available for future use.

No one was saying it was a bad idea. The specifications show that a 3.06ghz model will also run for the faster cpu speed in the specifications seen at Dell. We will still have to see what deals Kornowski can find however according to where cwwoodley is able to order from.
