Hello. I am new to upgrading /rebuilding computers. I have a hp pavilion 8760C. I want to make it the best gaming system that I can. I know it wont be blazing fast, but are their any cost efficent upgrades to help. I open for anything.

Thanks

Yes...

It is my PC.

I don't really have a budget because I am unsure what prices run. I guess I would not want to spend over $500.

For upgrading the card...

What would you recommend on the card? I do not know enough about them to know what would perform well on the hp 8760C if I up the memory.

You either have 2 or 4 ram slots since your max is 512sdram, you should check and see. If you have 4 dimm slots then you have to buy 3 sticks of 128mb ram, or if you have 2 slots you gotta buy 2 sticks of 256mb ram. Your type of ram is SDram, you gotta find out if it takes pc100 or pc133 sdram.

My friend's computer is similar to yours, it's the same hp but different model, I think your computer takes AGP 2x/4x. When your looking to buy a video card make sure it says AGP 2x/4x or AGP 4x/8x, but if it's just an 8x i heard it goes down to a 4x(not sure)

Well...

I have been playing GTA3 and am looking to buy the newest one along with maybe COD2.

Does anyone have a video card they would recommend? I consulted the HP site and it says it is upgradable to 768 MB ram, so I will do that.

What is your AGP speed first, i think you have a 4x but im not sure. I think the best 4x AGP card out there is a Radeon 9800 pro. Your product info for your computer model says the maximum is 512mb of ram. If the max is 768mb then you have 3 ram slots. The best thing to do is look into your computer and just see how many ram slots you have. If you have 2 or 4 slots then your maximum is 512, if you have 3 slots then your maximum is 768. ie. 4 x 128mb ram = 512mb, 2 x 256bm ram = 512, 3 x 256mb ram = 768.

Speed

According to the HP specs for the 8760C, it has a total of 3 slots for RAM. Currently it has 128mb and I am going to buy 2 x 258 mb.

As for the speed, yes, you are correct with 4x. If 768mb is correct, will this setup easily suppost the Radeon 9800 pro?

You've got to rememeber he can still buy x8 AGP cards, but they will only run at x4 speeds, which, tbh, is barely noticeable. So you can do alot better then a 9800pro

Card choices

Is there any real difference in performance between say the 6600 and the 6800 if it is a AGP8 since it will only work at AGP4x?

There is quite a big difference between the 66 and the 68, wether its GT or non GT. And yes it will run at x4 AGP, but chances are you wouldnt notice a difference between the 2.

Huh?

I understand the memory link, but the card link has like 30 cards on there. Which one of those?

Will the memory upgrade work if I leave the 128mb card in that came with the machine and add 2x256mb cards of another brand or do I have to replace the 128mb card?

You guys are really helping me alot.
