Newbie to building a computer

So i am new to putting a computer together but here is the problem that i'm having. I don't get video to the screen, but i also don't get the single beep letting you know its posting. Other than those two problems everything else seems to be running, the fans and the power led on the mobo. I only hooked up the basics to elimate some the troubleshooting. The ram, cpu power, processor, pci-express card, and the wires from the cd rom and hard drive to the mobo are the only things plugged in. I have no idea whats going on, and this is the 2nd mobo (same model both times) that i have tried.

Mobo :ASUS A8V-XE Socket 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard
Ram:mushkin Green 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model 991145
Pci-X: XFX GeForce 6600 GT / 128MB DDR3 / PCI Express / SLI / Dual DVI / TV Out / Video Card

Can anyone shead some light on my problem? I call asus tech support and the guy said the problem was that my mobo isnt compatible with my ram, but i read somewhere where someone else call asus and they told him to get mushkin or corsair ram. so i'm totally lost.

thanks in advance

pci-x is my lazy notation for pci-express card.

you r ram should be fine perhaps you could try another video card?

do you mean my actual video card or the brand of my video card? Cause my roommate has the same brand but i think his is the 6800 version and his didn't work either.

Have you checked that your monitor has been connected properly? If it has, then I think you should start testing each component separately, like taking your current video card and plugging it into another system and see if it works.
