newbie to SSD hard drives

Hi I know about SSD for quite some time but never have any knowledge about it. The only thing I know about SSD is it does not spin as old type cheap 2.5 or 3.5 inch hard drives.

I'd like to upgrade to SSD for my current system. I'd like to know what parameters I have to think about before buying a SSD and what brands I should avoid?

BTW, I know SSD is mainly used for installing operating system, instead of storing a lot of files. I notice that there are quite a lot of different capacities, from 64GB to probably 1000GB. I'd like to know how to find out which capacities is the best for me?

In one word, Anything about choosing and buying a SSD is welcome. Thanks

What's the current size disk drive in your PC now.

500gb is good and decent but 250gb is reasonable to it depends on your requirements , wants and budget.

Now is the best time probably to pick one up as they should be on sale here and there.

They are super good and you'll notice a change ASAP. Samsung is good other than that I don't know what brand is good or bad .

/subscribed hopefully I can learn a thing or two about ssd

The difference between a traditional HDD and a SSD is night and day - picture going from dial-up to broadband. Even a slow SSD will out-perform most performance HDDs out there. There is some additional setup that's optional, but even if you just plug it and start using it, the increased speed will be instantly noticeable.

Yes, while most people use them for OS/Software only, there's nothing wrong with using them for storage also. However, they are still more expensive per GB than a traditional Drive, so the typical route to go is to keep a standard HDD for storage. I'd wager the most popular size would be either 120 or 256 GB. If you are just looking to put your OS on it, 120 will be more than enough for a fully updated Win7 install (I've about 32GB to spare on mine currently).

As far as brands go, there are good and bad like everything else. Samsung makes some great Drives - their Evo line is very popular and offers amazing performance; I have two in my system now (OS and Software) and it just flies. As mentioned, if you really want one, do a bit of research over the weekend and snag a deal on Newegg.

You need to post a bit more info about what u need the space for. Personally I only use SSDs in my system as they are silent, super fast, can be hidden away and don't generate heat.
