Next Video Card

Hey, guys. I am looking to upgrade my video for gaming, and I haven't found a card that is perfect for my needs. I'd like to get a card that is powerful, but practical and would match my system good. I have a motherboard with an AGP 8x slot... If I had PCI-e, my choices would have been easier and have more cards to choose from. My current system is:

--AMD Athlon 64 2800+ ClawHammer 1.8 GHz
--1 GB PC3200 RAM
--Nvidia GeForce 6200 256 Mb....with 64 bit memory ('doh)

I'd like a card that would play Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2 with a good framerate.

I am leaning twords a Geforce 6600GT, but I have seen many reviews on many manufacturers that they can run quite hot under load, so I am now turning to the experts. Please help me out!

EDIT: Oh crud, Put it in the CPU forum *smacks own head* I'm going to report this to a mod and have it moved to the video forum :P

well what's your budget for this video card? I suggest you get a 7600gt, as its only a bit more than the 6600gt and alot better.

My budget is $150 max. I am not a super heavy gamer, but I still want to play some newer FPS/RPG's smoothly.

The x800 is a dying GPU though... good, but dying... I suggest that you save up just a little (25 bucks more) and get the 7600GT. Just ask your parents for a little extra cash :D

yes I agree, I was just suggesting a decent gpu for the strict 150 bucks limit. But yes, do try to get a 7600gt

7600GT if you can, but the X800GTO2 is one great card. Another comparible option if you aren't comfortable with unlocking the extra pipelines of the X800GTO2 is the X850XT, which would operate pretty much the same, though it may not be able to be overclocked enough.

Thanks, guys for all the suggestions. I, myself am an Nvidia person, so I'll look into the 7600GT. There does not appear to be one of them on Newegg or any other site that runs in AGP. They must be rare in the AGP slot. Anyway, thanks again, everybody :D

There isn't an AGP version.

This (somewhat crippled) 6800 would be suitable given the budget, provided you are willing to unlock it. Aside from that your best choice would be an X1600 Pro, which is well priced, or a 6600GT if you want to stick with nVidia.

Well I stated in my first post that I had AGP, and not PCI-E... Everybody's suggesting PCI-E cards when I don't even have the slot :P

ceew1, is the 6800 a XT version, cause it looks like one.

Maroon Fox, you could get a GF6600GT, it's better than a GF6800XT. There's by the way no good reason to get a 256Mb version unless it's somehow cheaper than a 128Mb version. Just make sure you're getting a card with GDDR3 memory, that's my suggestion.

what the,,,, i thought 7600 is like the worst card you can get,,,,

at least thats what i thought i heard,

because thats not really well-known gpu from nvidia...

i'd go 6800 ....

Despite Apollo's marketing, it is (hence the "somewhat crippled" in my earlier post). Nonetheless, it's significantly cheaper than newegg is advertising 6600GTs for, and will outperform them once unlocked.

The 7600 series are arguably the best cards at their price ranges. The GS solidly outperforms both the 6600GT and X1600Pro, while the 7600GT destroys the 6800GS, and is arguably better than the X850XT, while cooler, quiter and less power-hungry. Unfortunately, there's no AGP version.

That's one of the first times i've seen tigerdirect have a significantly cheaper price than newegg. Good value.
