No Active Mixer Devices Available...ARGH!!!

OK, this problem is driving me nuts....

When I start up my PC (compaq), I can change the volume for the first couple of minutes of it being on...after that, when I double click the sound icon, I get the message "no active sound mixer devices available" But when I go to device manager, i can clearly see that the sound card is installed and working. I have scoured the net, but can't find any answers to my question.

Well, just found some alternate drivers on a driver site, and it seems like it might have fixed my problem. Will definitely post back here if it's not all better.
