No audio/video. Help please.

Ok, so, I've recently updated my bios in preparation of installing a new CPU. After updating my bios, I started having some blue screen issues while gaming. So, I tried updating other drivers and the chipset, etc. to help make everything updated.

That's when I lost sound and the ability to play videos. I tried rolling back my drivers, bios, etc. but nothing seems to help. I tried system restore, no help there. I reformatted and reinstalled my OS (XP-32) hoping that it would set everything back to neutral, but that didn't help either. I've reinstalled everything and I've made sure that everything says it is fine in Device Manager. I've tried resetting the motherboard using the jumper. Nothing is fixing this. I'm just about to call it quits and take it to the shop and pay them to work on it.

When it first boots up (to the desktop), I hear a seconds worth of the windows audio and then it cuts out.

When I try to play music (either file or cd), it opens the player and shows that it is playing, but no sound is played.

I've tested my audio in the Sound and Audio Device Properties. It shows that my microphone is receiving audio and shows that the speakers are receiving audio, but I can't hear anything.

Yes, everything is plugged in and yes the volume is up (nothing is muted).

This is my last effort before taking it in. Any thoughts or suggestions on why my sound and video aren't working, would be great! Thanks.

my rig is in my sig.

Sounds like ;) It may be a faulty sound card (or onboard sound)
If you have done a clean install and updated your drivers (from the manufacture support page; then I can't see it being Malware issue, so that's out.

There may be a Bios update that fixes some sound issue, possibly confirm your computer/motherboard's Bios is fully up to date (from your manufacture support page)

Otherwise I can only think it must be hardware related (Speakers; cabling; Sound card <- In that order of diagnosis as well)

Thanks for the ideas. I'll run through everything again.

Is it possible for something to be TOO updated? I mean, if I updated an audio driver to the newest version, but something else isn't updated all the way, could they conflict? Does what I just typed make any sense? I just don't want to be updating everything if something can cause bigger issues (which is how I got here, I think.) I don't want to do something that can't be undone is all. Is that even possible? Or, in theory, should I be able to undo and updates that I've done?

Thanks again!

Yes

Many users tend to source drivers from other areas (ie not their manufacture support page)
These "updated" drivers may be corrupt, or may not be fully compatible with your system setup
The rule of thumb, always use the manufacture support page to update your drivers ;)

Also, I'm thinking speakers; but if you hadn't done a clean install it could have been malware

As for "undo" just make sure your clean install is clean

Cool. Yeah, I make sure to use the Asus, nVidia, Microsoft, etc. sites when looking for updates, drivers, etc.

I've checked the speakers on a different system, they have power and sound comes through.

Install was as clean as they come.

Thanks again for the ideas.

After up updated the bios did you reset it? 95% of the time you wont have a problem, but I've ran across a few that would just freak out till they were reset after a update.

I like what you're saying, even though (I'll be honest) I have no idea what you're saying. :o I'm not sure what you mean by "reset it".

I downloaded the latest bios version and put it on my usb drive. I used the Asus EZ Flash 2 program to update from the usb drive. It was all kind of automatic. Am I supposed to do something else?

Thanks!

If you have now installed the latest BIOS update for your motherboard/computer, you will need to restart your computer

Directly after restart you should notice text on screen that says similar to "Press DEL to get to Setup" (Note it may be F2 key or other)
Go into BIOS Setup and locate Setup Defaults (it may say Optimized Defaults)
Select (enable) it, then Save and Exit Bios Setup screen (just press F10 key ;))

Once your computer starts to Windows again, test sound again in Control Panel > Sounds

Ok, well thanks for the ideas and help everyone. I took to the shop and discovered that the audio issue was a setting in the bios. The video issue was simply a missing codec. sigh. Got it going again.

Thanks again.

You know Bios and resetting was stated about 3 times in the thread (you even updated it, in Post #1)
Obviously you never went to Bios Settings yourself? Reset? Or even just check the settings?
Easy money for the "shop" I suspect :(

Yep, thanks. Didn't cost a dime.
