No Case Computer for temporary time

Hello everyone, I was planning on building a high end gaming computer
(parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/xyrmxY),
and the parts will come tomorrow except for the case. I am a really impatient person and I want to get into installing everything before the case comes in 4 days. Is it possible to have a fully functioning computer without a case for a few days, and how would I set it up in the safest way possible so I don't damage any parts?

This will be my first computer build, so i'm a novice to this and I don't want to make any rookie mistakes that could damage this computer because it would be a very expensive loss.

Sigh... why did you drop $300 on a R9 390. Don't really agree with half the parts list... but that's not the point of this thread.

Anyways, I do not advise you to build your components without the case.

My friend picked out most of the parts for me because I had no sense of compatibility..... I was just wondering if it would receive any damage if it was caseless for about 3 days. Its going to be placed in the basement where nothing can really touch it.

Are you suggesting your motherboard is going to levitate in the air for 3 days? Because something will touch it and it will be at risk of shorting out your components.

I will have a cardboard box where the top is cut out so it is only being held by its sides. Lets just say I found a way to make it work without shorting out, would everything else be fine?

Sure sounds like you're set on doing what you asked in the original post and just wanted someone's approval. I'm not going to give it an approval, but if you want to take the risk, by all means, no one here is going to stop you from doing so.

well what risk am I taking if the motherboard is properly raised?

You can do it, as per others it presents accidental risks to the PC and isn't recommended at all. From a technical perspective you can have a usable computer outside of the case though.

Don't you just love it when keyboard commandos respond with comments and opinions totally at odds with your actual question -- "why would you do that?", "that's too risky," "no one should do that!" <G>
I normally try to ignore those divertive responses, but some times it's just worth commenting.

What are you even on about?

We used to have a member here on CoFo that always ran caseless. He just built everything on top of the motherboard box.

He also regularly changed parts and eventually upgraded to a test bench case.

If it's just 3 days and you're careful with it then go nuts. I would keep an eye on the 390 though, don't want it moving around within the slot since it's not secured.

I say, make a desk computer like me, to where my computer parts are safely placed on the under side of the desk with coats of non - air sealed plastic protecting them.
