I purchased two computers recently (HP notebook and Lenovo desktop), and none of the computers came with cd roms. Even though it hasnt happened yet, what if my computer crashes and I need to reinstall the operating sytem (which in this case would be windows vista)? Since the computers didnt come with a cd-rom, how would we install the operating system?

Well, most newer computers allow you to boot from USB devices, so you could use and external drive or a flash drive.

Do you mean they didn't com with the CD-ROM drives or the CDs that contain Windows and your drivers? Assuming your copies of Windows and Office are legitimate they should have sent you the discs along with the computers. Where did you buy your computers from?

Err, now that I reread it I think he probably meant the actually discs and not the drives. It's actually pretty common now for new computers to not come standard with restore disks... but you can usually get them for $10 or $20 extra.

PohTayToez, I think you're wrong. These days, EVERY computer will either come with a:

System OS Restore Disk *now pretty rare*

OR

Recovery Parition on your HDD (my laptop's was marked "COMPAQ RESTORE") *common*

to clarify, i was talking about the cd's the ones with windows, office, and the drivers, not the cd-rom drive. I still dont know why they wouldnt come with the cds. Can I call the company to get them to mail it to me and do I have to pay an extra charge for that?

Did you check for a backup partition like I said?

Err... where was I wrong? I didn't say anything about computers not coming with a backup partition.

Yes, you can order them I believe. Like I said, $10 or $20.

But, as oscaryu1 said, you most definitely will have a backup partition anyway. A backup partition is a portion of your harddrive set aside that has all of the backup files of your OS and other programs that came with the computer such as Microsoft Office. The downside to this is that if your hard drive dies the backup partition dies with it, so to reload your OS and what not you'll need the discs.

Go to My computer and look for "_______ RECOVERY" . If you find it, click on it, and it will initiate the installation... and go through installation like a CD, do not remove this partition when deleting your Windows one though...
