Couldn't find a specific anti virus thread so hoping this one is relevant and someone is able to help.
Hi,
I am working on a Dell Inspiron mini laptop with Windows XP and I have somehow contracted some sort of root kit virus. It happened a few days ago when the version of Open Office I was using crashed and would no longer save my work properly. I was then told that my hard drive was full and I had to delete some programmes to free some space up. I did as it said, stripping my computer to the bare basics to free some space but even when the only programmes I had installed were Google Chrome, Panda antivirus and Notepad with all the basic Windows start up icons, I was still being told my hard drive is empty on space - so much so I could not run a system restore.
I did loads of disk clean ups, scans and analysis but nothing showed up as a problem. Later on, I looked in my hard drive and found a load of files in there that were new. They just consisted of a lot of numbers and then inside each one of these 4 new folders, were half a dozen other folders, titled by random numbers containing a RTF file called eula.rtf and a file called Hotfix. I logged in as an administrator to delete these files believing this would free up some space but even though when I logged back in they were gone, I am still being told I have no space on my hard drive. How can I get rid of this virus please as it is preventing me using anything but the Internet and Notepad on my laptop.....
Any advice would be appreciated and laptop saving thanks
