i upgraded my graphic card (ati 128mb) on my pc but i can't install the driver for it. A warning box came up and said "please set it to standard windows driver first"

I then went to the device manager to update the driver but i couldn't find DISPLAY ADAPTER on the list......what is happening to my pc ??

anyone know the alternative apart from re-format my pc which I intended to do but you guys might have other things to say ?

Thanks in advance

When you swapout vid cards one thing to do first is use the uninstall utility provided for that model card to remove all software and drivers for it. This is what you will have to do first to have Windows detect the card as new hardware and request the drivers for it at that time. If you don't find the removal utility on the original disk you will have to go to the first card's support site to download it from there. Once done the restart of the system will then bring up the new hardware wizard.

I've got the old 8mb graphic card and it doesn't listed in the device manager so that's why i can't uninstall it....

Where can i uninstall it apart from going into device manager list ??

cheers

Well the first place when there is no uninstall option seen along with the links for any program menu listing would be the control panel. Off the Start menu you get there through the settings link or double click on MyComputer if the control panel was set to displayed there through folder options. Then just find the add/remove icon and double click on that to see a list of installed items. If you still see no specific listing for a video card there you will then to get a driver cleaning utility along with a good system registry cleaner to locate and remove the now orphaned drivers as well as invalid registry values. The reg is still trying to load the 8mb card's drivers.

What make and model card did you have there. Most newer video softwares like NVidia and ATI alike have driver removers that you can download direct from their support pages. A few freeware registry cleaners like RegCleaner can be downloaded direct from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html

it's an ATI RADEON 9250 128MB so i'm not sure if it's new enough to have the driver removers to download. Never knew about it until you told me, thanks a lot.

I will try to do as you said and see how it goes.

thankyou so much pceye, you're a genius :).....
I installed cat-uninstaller and VIA driver and now it's working perfectly fine.

Thanks again buddy.

Add that link to your favorites in case you lose the utility. ATI usually has a good removal utility for their drivers anyway. NVidia also has some good uninstallers for their drivers as well if you ever need one.
