No display and flashing lights

My monitor displays disappears from time to time and while there isn't any display, the monitor function lights of the monitor keeps on blinking. Its a CRT monitor.
 
Did you check your monitor's connection to your computer? Maybe it's loose and is losing it's connection?
 
Have you tried moving the mouse? You said your monitor displays disappears from time to time, it might be the power saving features of XP or Vista at work, by default, your monitor will enter into powersaving mode after 20 mins of inactivity. To disable that you have to go into the page where you set the screensaver and click on advanced power options and go from there.
