No display on TV

Ok so I just hooked up my PC to my LCD TV and I have the desktop displaying on both the tv and PC monitor but I can not get anything else to display on the TV.

For example right now as I type this on my computer monitor my tv is still showing my desktop and not CF, also there is no icons on the TV. How do I change this? Also I'm using the ATI software that came with my Video card.
 
sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I was going to connect the PC with HDMI, but I decided to try and use VGA. I can get it to display on both but I have to change the settings on the computer as well. What I want to do is keep my computer resolution at 1280 x 1024 and put my tv at a different setting, but I figure out how to do so.
