my mate at work asked me to look at his computer, but no nothing comes up on the monitor when powered on ive made sure the power ide cables are in ive made sure the ide cables in correct made sure the HD and optical drives the jumpers are set but still nothing comes up also i know its working because the PC fans come on when you turn it on and also the GFX card works because its fan come on, but i think it could be the HD but surely that wouldnt stop the display coming up

OMG I had this! The mainboard and psu is defective or was it just with me that the main board was defective..... I'm sure it said psu too.....;)

Get a different psu, test it out.
If that doesnt work get a diff vid card to test out.
If that doesnt work buy a new one and throw the old on in the trash.

i had the same problem myself...i disassembled the entire computer in bits and pieces, didn't find anything unusual, blew some dust off, assembled the whole system without any modifications and - bam - it worked. I don't know what happened...but the computer's been working lice a charm.

If you're feeling lucky, try it...

i cant troubleshoot using another computer his computer is the only one in the office so what can i do

You can bring spare parts from wherever.

We can't really find out the problem by not using another computer. It's the quickest and most efficient way.

No the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is not the problem as that isn't actually used until POST and past anyway so you would still get a picture even if the HDD was defective. Silly but simple question, tried changing the display (as the monitor might just be buggered)? Made sure all of the power cables are placed and hooked up correctly? Might sound like silly suggestions but I always find that due to me being considerably well equiped in terms of PC troubleshooting I often over look the smaller easier problems a beginner would consider.

What are the specs of the computer + PSU? Has this been an occuring problem since the computer was first used or only started to happen recently?

Rove.
