hello! i am in a big state of confusion right now, i have a laptop with windows vista installed, and my desktop computer runs on XP ....I just bought a netgear router, the problem i have is that apparently i am missing a driver...controller...etc of ethernet on my desktop...

when i connect the router's ethernet cable to my modem (dsl) the router detects it, but when i connect the other ethernet cable from my COMPUTER TO ROUTER, i get no response from the computer atall!

I have checked device manager and under my network idevices i see nothing reffered to as ethernet, i have downloaded so many so-called ethernet controllers, but idk what else to do, when i disconnect my modems usb and use ethernet cable my computer just doesnt show up as anything and i cant go online through an ethernet cable

most compounds on my computer are from intel, i went to the page and see so many different ethernet updaters,controllers...but idk which one is it that i need or what to download especifically????

anyone can help?

check to make sure that your ethernet controller card is enabled on your desktop. Go to control panel - network and internet connections - network connections
make sure that the connection that says local area connection is enabled and says connected rather than disabled or limited or no connectivity. Also with your modem connected to your router can you laptop get online via it's wireless connection?

yes i can connect to the internet by connecting my modem to laptop, and in my network settings i see nothing referred to as ethernet or something similar to that, but i have this one problem that i have been having since long, Local area 2 (network cable unplugged) ? now that you mentioned checking over my connections d you think it may be that, that is causing a problem? it has never been an issue for me to connect to the internet on my desktop computer with that "network cable unplugged) so i never paid any mind to that....

this is what it says:
local are 2
network cable unplugged
Intel(R) PRO 100/VE network connection

I once tried fixing this but never found what was really the issue and it still says a network cable is unplugged...

btw eveything is fine the cables DO work, the modem the router...th problem seems to be my computer...in my device manager there isn't anything that has to do with ethernet all i see is my current modem connection...

local are connection 2 sounds like the connection you need to be using to connect your desktop to your router. I assume you have the cable plugged in properly. The only thing i could suggest is that perhaps your network adapter in your computer has gone bad.
