no hard drive in my computer

I just swapped out an older 40gb hard drive for a 160 i got cheap

i have my op system on an 80 gig that is the master and stayed in

i pulled the ribbon off the 40 and just put the 160 right where it was and hooked it up exactly
then started the computer

in bios it is recognizing that there is a 160gb drive there but its not showing up in the "my computer window"

how do it fix this

Im pretty sure i put the slave jumper where it needs to be

check if the jumper is set the same as the old 40Gb drive (if it was master, set the new one as master to, etc. ) further, does the harddisk start running when you start the pc?

yea it seems to be running

i never formatted it

when i bring up the device manager it is able show the 160 gb drive

but its not partitioned or formatted

when you go to the bios. does the automatic IDE option recognize it?
(maybe you should try setting both drives on CS ;) )

what is cs?
CS stands for cable select, it basically looks at how its being connected and decides on master or slave for you, its a lot easier.

Try resetting the BIOS and boot again.

If your using Win XP. Go to control panel, administrative tools, Computer management, then Disk management, you can create a partition for the new HD and format it. After formatting you can then assign a drive letter so that the drive can be seen on "My Computer".

Don't forget to assign a drive letter to the disk after the format - this is done by right clicking the disk.
