Hey everyone i am looking into getting a new computer but i know that if i buy one that is prebuilt than i wont be getting as much for my money that i could be. I was hoping that someone here could help me build a computer for 400-500 dollars mainly to play wow and some other games on i would really appreciate any help anyone gives. thanks

if you have no idea what your doing and dont have any others that could help you put it together than i strongly recommend buying prebuilt.
unless someone can give you easy step by step instructions...
good luck

Heres something I put together, its pretty basic, but will run WoW at a decent level, believe me I have raided with alot worse lol. Im still trying to find a way to get you a quad-core though, but this is a nice dual core... Ill keep looking but without mail in rebates and without shipping this comes to $530

Where did you find that you don't get more for your money with pre-built? I wouldn't find that this is always the case. When you count the manufacturer warranty, plus the dirt cheap extended warranties, in my experience, it is possible that it could be cheaper with pre-built. Brand name, of course.

Example: $529.99 HP Pavilion p6710f Athlon II X4 640(3.0GHz) 4GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity ATI Radeon HD 4200 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I would change video card to GTS 450
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130572&cm_re=GTS_450-_-14-130-572-_-Product

It cost only $99.99 after rebate

They found it inside the case.
I have a mouse and a keyboard otherwise i need to start from scratch
Needing to include a monitor w/ that $500 will make it difficult.
Unless you can find something local to use till you can save up for the one you want.
Would that be an option?

Edit:
A suggestion/example:

435 x3 = 72. only +12 for another core.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103920

880G - 63. This igp will do well with WoW and the like.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157199

WDB 500 32mb = 55. w/today only code. I chose it because the F3 1TB is probly 16mb per platter.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320

RAM = 43. w/code EMCKJJG39 but you may need to sign up for eblast to use it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211409

67. - This ps will is good and will handle a vc upgrade. Good deal on the optical too.

The above = 300.

Remaining is 7/case/monitor.
You might could save 30-35$ here and there for something lessor. But still wouldn't enough for gpu/monitor/7. I think you'll be happy with the igp and you can add a gpu to this system later on. So a used monitor seems to be the place to save for now.
If you could find a suitable used monitor in the 60$ range, you'd have 140 left for 7 and a case. Perhaps there's a, good case you like/7 combo that would add more to the monitor $.

Try GTS 450

Oh no IGP just wont do for wow, you have to play on very low settings and you still get lag issues... I raided with an igp think it was the ATI Radeon 3200, it was so bad lol

Bud, my suggestion would be to save up as least $100 so you can build a more upgradable computer, so that you can replace parts in the future

I really appreciate all of your help but I'm still pretty confused about most of what you all are saying i am by no means a computer. i did find an old CRT monitor in my basement if that helps.

OK. Not sure what raided means here. Since I don't play games I went off WoW user reviews that have said medium settings, maybe a bit higher depending on what game. And I don't know how good those system analizers are for games, but mine came up well over minimum. Since a monitor is needed, then it's wait for more funds, or do something like I described and put the $ towards better core components, since the gpu is the only thing that can be temporarily left out. It won't have the gaming quality till one is added, but it would be a better finished system, and usuable now.
Just MO.

When I get time I'll check some games out and see 1st hand.
How does this look for temp use? Bad? (scroll down for fps)

That 4670 should be plenty for wow. My daughter ran wow with a geforce 4 4200 for a while, then got an upgrade to a 64mb video card then finally up to a radeon x1300 256mb and said there was no lag at all....on default settings whatever that is. The x1300 was my old card that I gave her when I got the 512mb version of the 4670...huge improvement.

OK. Not sure what raided means here

It's an in game term that means running a dungeon with 10+ other people to kill a boss/get in-game loot. It's usually the most taxing part, graphically, of WoW, other than being in heavily populated towns.

WoW changed their code a while ago (I believe) to make IGP less useful and started their coding to pull away from it. You can still play on very low settings, as it's not a graphically intensive game, but it's not very appealing.

Correct, Wow vanilla, and the BC expansion were fine with an igp, the wrath expansion at low settings was tolerable, but with the release of the cataclysm expansion and the upgraded graphics, Blizz made it hard to play on an igp, even at low settings and all the distance setting to a min, no water effect, and minimal shadow, you can still end up with game lag.:(

OK guys, someone may come along and tweak this a bit for the better, we'll see. With an interim monitor, and if can do $573 after ship, till $45 comes back in rebates. Makes it $528.
