No media in drive

I am in Windoes 7 and want to back up to a CD. When I try I get the reply
There is no media on the drive.
I would be grateful for suggestions

Does the burner show up in "computer"? Is the drive a standard dvd drive instead of a burner drive?

No it's a standard DVD drive

A standard dvd drive won't burn anything so you can't back up anything. You need a dvd burner to be able to backup.

Sorry, I mislead you. I have writer but it is a CD writer and I get the message there as well

Then maybe the drive doesn't detect the media. Do the drives show up in "my computer"?
