"no os/recovery discs" question

Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question but if not maybe the admin can move it.
I'm considering buying a computer on Ebay and I'm confused about something. Can someone clear this up for me? I see that alot of computers are being sold with an OS loaded but no recovery discs. Let's say I buy a used computer and it is sold to me without any recovery/driver/OS discs. If the harddrive dies,do I now have an expensive doorstop? Will I have to go out and buy a new copy of windows and then figure out where to get all my drivers, or do I just need to make sure I make recovery discs as soon as I get the computer and will the discs I make have the OS,drivers, apps on them? Even if I make recovery discs doesnt it ask you to put a serial # in at some point?
Any help is appreciated, thanks GG.

When I have had a PC that offered the recovery disc option, I made them as soon as I learned how to use whatever wizard/program the PC maker preinstalled. They have the OS, drivers, and apps already installed, specific to the machine you're dealing with. Use the recovery discs and when you're done, it's as if the machine just left the factory.

Whether or not the reinstall asks for the serial, find it on the sticker and SAVE IT just in case you need it.

If you buy a PC and the drive dies before you make recovery discs, you'd probably have to get in touch with the PC maker. Me, I'd just buy a copy of Windows and install it from scratch.

I don't know that recovery discs will re-install the OS though. I mean if you are speaking of recovery discs as in "backup recovery discs" then that's only going to restore your settings, personal files, etc. Now with an OEM recovery disc that OvenMaster is speaking of, that will store all of the OS/Drivers/Apps.

What I would recommend is to buy the system, and then look for recovery discs for that model which are relatively inexpensive depending on the model. If not, then you'll be looking at a new OS CD.

Yes Recovery disks will reinstall the whole system even with a blank hdd I believe. The thing is the recovery disks are linked to just that one pc. They are oem branded
