No progress while formatting HDD

Hello, I have a Transcend StoreJet 250GB external Hard Drive. It served well for a long time but it got damaged somehow when a file couldn't get fully transfered, it works at an almost decent level (it can still transfer files and stream videos but without skipping time in the video, otherwise it freezes), I want to re-format it and see if it goes back to normal, but whenever I try, it never shows any sign of progress.
Is there any way this can be solved?

How are you trying to format it? It may be damaged beyond repair. I would try downloading either dban or Killdisk and use that to try formatting your drive.

I was formatting the HDD with the default formatting tool from the Control Panel on Windows, I will try those two you mentioned and edit this reply with the results.
