i start up my computer and everything works fine until the desktop begins to load... the monitor turns off but the computer remains responsive. ive tried several monitors... anyone have any suggestions? i dont think its the video card because it still shows the boot up screen when i turn the computer on...

Sounds like a problem with your display configuration or drivers. Try booting into safemode and then reinstall the drivers.
yea, its something to do with display drivers.
unless you accidentally set a resolution or refresh the monitor couldn't handle, something got corrupted and the pc is trying to use a resolution or refresh beyond the monitors capabilities. probably beyond all normal monitors capabilities which is why others wont work either.
happened to me back in jan when i was installing vista for the first time. had to boot it in safe mode and reinstall the video card drivers, alogn with setting the desktop to not be some odd resolution and refresh (like 1980x340 and a 150mhz refresh)
