no sound from 5.1 reciever

i got a old receiver off of ebay i looked through my computer part room and found 2 speakers but i had no sub woofer to test it with so i plugged them into it and i got no sound do i need a sub woofer to get the sound or is it dead

Sub shouldn't matter, you can also test with other audio sources like a CD player.

Whats plugged into the receiver? Are you sure it's set to the right input/output?
